Ratu Meli Bogileka is a Fijian politician. [1] [2] He was the Secretary of the People's National Party (PNP) up to its decision to merge into the Party of National Unity (PANU) on 5 March 2006. This merger,an affair complicated by several about-turns,saw Bogileka appointed Secretary of the new PANU. (Bogileka had originally helped to forge the PNP as a union of a former PANU and another party, the Protector of Fiji (BKV);both parties were reregistered in January 2006,seceding from the PNP;the PNP and the BKV subsequently merged into PANU in March).
Bogileka was educated at St John's College in Cawaci. [3]
First elected as a candidate of the original PANU to represent the Ba West Fijian communal constituency in the House of Representatives in the parliamentary election of 1999,Bogileka subsequently served in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry from 1999 to 2000,and was held as a hostage [4] [5] by gunmen led by George Speight, who led a coup d'état against the Chaudhry government, starting on 19 May 2000. Political realignments that followed the 2000 crisis saw him lose his seat in the election held to restore democracy in 2001.
Bogileka also stirred controversy by criticizing the legacy of modern Fiji's first statesman,Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, who is regarded as a national hero. On 23 May 2005,he said that Sukuna's achievements had been overstated, and that his policies had confined Fijians to villages and marginalized them economically. He considered that Sukuna should have used his chiefly position to urge indigenous Fijians to work rather than remain in their villages in the name of culture. His comments provoked an angry reaction from the government, which issued a press release calling his statement "inaccurate" and saying that it should be "treated with the contempt it deserves."
Bogileka has also served General Secretary of the Viti and Resource Landowners Association, [6] which advocates the return to indigenous ownership of all "crown land" –i.e.,government-owned land. This was not a political demand,he told the Fiji Sun on 3 January 2006,but rather an insistence on the fulfillment of a promise made by Queen Victoria in 1881,at Nailaga in Ba Province. He strongly disagreed with Military Commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama for saying that the association should not "waste time" trying to recover ownership of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Delainabua,Suva.
It was announced on 12 March 2006 that Bogileka would contest his old Ba West constituency in the parliamentary election scheduled for 6–13 May. He was unsuccessful.
Following the 2006 Fijian coup d'état Bogileka became a supporter of the military regime, [7] and urged the removal of democrats from the regime's pre-election political forum. [8] In 2009 he was suspended from the Nasinu Town Council for unspecified reasons. [9]
He contested the 2014 election as a Labour candidate, [3] [10] but was unsuccessful.
Mahendra Pal Chaudhry is a Fijian politician and the leader of the Fiji Labour Party. Following a historic election in which he defeated the long-time former leader,Sitiveni Rabuka, the former trade union leader became Fiji's first Indo-Fijian Prime Minister on 19 May 1999,but exactly one year later,on 19 May 2000 he and most of his Cabinet were taken hostage by coup leader George Speight,in the Fiji coup of 2000. Unable to exercise his duties,he and his ministers were sacked by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara on 27 May;Mara intended to assume emergency powers himself but was himself deposed by the military leader,Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
The Fiji Labour Party, also known as Fiji Labour,is a political party in Fiji. Most of its support is from the Indo-Fijian community, although it is officially multiracial and its first leader was an indigenous Fijian,Dr. Timoci Bavadra. He subsequently served his country as Ambassador of Fiji to Japan. At its annual general meeting on 17 February 2006,the party voted to dissolve itself and merge with its coalition partner, the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL). The President of the party at the time of its dissolution was Ratu Tanoa Cakobau,a Bauan chief, while Ratu Josefa Dimuri served as General Secretary. For legal reasons,Parliamentary members of the disbanded party maintained a separate caucus in the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, until the end of the parliamentary term,on 27 March 2006.
The Fiji coup d'état of 2000 was a civilian coup d'état by hardline i-Taukei nationalists against the elected government of an Indo-Fijian Prime Minister,Mahendra Chaudhry on 19 May 2000. This was followed by an attempt on 27 May by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to assert executive authority, and then by a military coup on 29 May by Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama. The coups resulted in the removal of the elected government and its replacement by an interim regime headed by Josefa Iloilo. In March 2001 the Court of Appeal of Fiji ruled that the coups and interim regime were illegal. An elected government was finally restored by the 2001 Fijian general election.
Since attaining independence from the United Kingdom on 10 October 1970,Fijian history has been marked by exponential economic growth up to 1987,followed by relative stagnation, caused to a large extent by political instability following two military coups in 1987 and a civilian putsch in 2000. This was followed by another military coup in 2006. Rivalry between indigenous Fijians and Indo-Fijians,rather than ideological differences, have been the most visible cleavage of Fijian politics. The Grand Coalition for Fiji, formerly known as the Grand Coalition Initiative Group, was a coalition of five predominantly indigenous Fijian political parties in Fiji, forged for the purpose of contesting the general election scheduled for 2006 under a single umbrella and forming a coalition government subsequently. Efforts to unite the ethnic Fijian parties were in part a response to their electoral defeat in 1999,when they had been split, enabling the Indian-backed FLP to win a landslide victory. Nevertheless,Tomasi Vakatora, the chairman of the Grand Coalition, publicly stated in February 2006 that it was open to sharing preferences with the predominantly Indian parties. By the time of the election, however, the coalition was virtually defunct.
