Mern is a village with a population of 987 (1 January 2023) [1] located in Vordingborg Municipality, Region Zealand in Denmark.

Contents

The village is a former Railway town at the Næstved-Præstø-Mern Railroad which was closed in 1961.

Mern church was originally a Romanesque brick-covered church, later rebuild and extended, now as a white-washed village church. The church has 4 south chapels from approximately 1510-20, the tower somewhat later. [2]

The Mern meteorite

In the early afternoon, 29. August 1878, a 4.6 kg meteoritic stone fell to the ground just east of Mern. The Mern meteorite is the most massive meteorite of the only 4 clearly witnessed meteorite falls (all stones) recovered in Denmark. [3]

Venø is a small Danish island located in Limfjorden in the north of Jutland, 3 kilometres north of Struer. It is 7.5 kilometres long and has a maximum width of 1.5 kilometres. With an area of 6.5 square kilometres, it has a population of 204 as of 1 January 2015. Since 1958, there has been a ferry service from Venø Odde, the island's most southerly point, over the narrow sound to Kleppen. Venø's highest point, Forstov Bakke, is 27 metres above sea level and has cliffs to the west. The island is a popular holiday destination with good beaches and camping facilities. The only village, Venø By, in the centre of the island has Denmark's smallest church as well as a small fishing harbour which is suitable for pleasure boats.
