Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi is the younger son of Mian Bashir Ahmed Larvi a politician and a Caliph of Islamic Sufi order (Naqshbandi, Majadadi, Larvi) in Jammu and Kashmir. Mian Altaf is grandson of saint Mian Nizam ud Din, the founding President of Gujjar-Jat Conference, a socio political body established in 1932. [1] Mian Altaf was born in 1957 in Baba Nagri, Wangath, Kangan Ganderbal, Kashmir. [2]

Personal life

Family

He was born in 1957 in Kashmir. His family had migrated from the Hazaras in the 1800s. His Great Grand Father(Mian Abdullah) know as Baba Jee Sahib Larvi, his grandfather Mian Nizam Ud Din Larvi & his father Mian Bashir Ahmed Larvi were also religious personalities in Kashmir. They are buried in Wanghat, Kashmir. Mian Altaf has an elder brother Mian Sarfraz. Mian Bashir Ahmed declared his younger son Mian Altaf Ahmed as Wali E Ahed (Crown Caliph) successor on annual occasion of 8 June 2017, making him heir-designate to the throne.

Education

Mian Altaf is a law graduate from University of Kashmir. [3]

Religious views

He is a Muslim. He proselytizes the doctrines of Naqshbandi and (Majadadi) in order to advocate Sufism to his followers through Bayyet. His family has a following of millions. Hundreds of his followers throng his house at Baba Nagri, Wangath in Kangan every day to meet him and seek his blessings. [4] The most renowned follower of his family is Sheikh Al-Mashaikh Faisal ur Rehman Usmani Qadri Suhrawardi, Chishti Qalandari Abul Alai Naqshbandi Mujaddidi Madari Shatari Ferdowsi Nizami Sabri Jahangiri Shazli.[ citation needed ]

Political career

He is popular in the Gujjar, Bakarwal and Pahari Community. [5] [6] He has been elected five times in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. [7] Mian Altaf's family has a long political standing, with his grandfather Mian Nizam-ud-din having remained National Conference MLA from 1952 to 1967. His father Mian Bashir Ahmed represented Kangan constituency from 1967 to 1987 and was a minister also. Mian Nizam Ud Din Larvi, Mian Bashir Ahmed larvi and Mian Altaf Ahmed never lost any election since they stepped into politics. Mian Altaf Ahmed has served as Minister of Forestry, Ecology and Environment in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been a Cabinet Minister in Jammu and Kashmir twice. He gave his first term under Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah in 1996 and second term as Cabinet Minister under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

He was a politician and a Caliph of Islamic Sufi order in Jammu and Kashmir. He was born in November 1923 in Pehalnar Wangath, Kangan Ganderbal Kashmir and died in August 2021 at the age of 97.

The Gangabal Lake, also called Haramukh Ganga, is an alpine high-altitude oligotrophic lake situated at the foot of Mount Haramukh in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake has a maximum length of 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) and maximum width of 1 kilometre (0.62 mi). It is fed by precipitation, glaciers and springs and is home to many species of fish, including the brown trout. Water from the lake outflows into the nearby Nundkol Lake and then into the Sind River via Wangath Nallah. This lake is considered sacred in Hinduism as one of the abodes of Shiva, and Kashmiri Hindus perform an annual pilgrimage to the lake called Harmukh-Gangabal Yatra.

After the Partition of India, during October–November 1947 in the Jammu region of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, many Muslims were massacred and others driven away to West Punjab. The killings were carried out by extremist Hindus and Sikhs, aided and abetted by the forces of Maharaja Hari Singh. The activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played a key role in planning and executing the riots. An estimated 20,000–100,000 Muslims were massacred. <span class="mw-page-title-main">1947 Poonch rebellion</span> Political rebellion in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–1948

In spring 1947, an uprising against the Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir broke out in the Poonch jagir, an area bordering the Rawalpindi district of West Punjab and the Hazara district of the North-West Frontier Province in the future Pakistan. It was driven by grievances such as high taxes, the Maharaja's neglect of World War veterans, and above all, Muslim nationalism with a desire to join Pakistan. The leader of the rebellion, Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, escaped to Lahore by the end of August 1947 and persuaded the Pakistani authorities to back the rebellion. In addition to the backing, Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan authorised an invasion of the state, by the ex-Indian National Army personnel in the south and a force led by Major Khurshid Anwar in the north. These invasions eventually led to the First Kashmir War fought between India and Pakistan, and the formation of Azad Kashmir provisional government. The Poonch jagir has since been divided across Azad Kashmir, administered by Pakistan and the state of Jammu and Kashmir, administered by India.

Owais Ahmed Rana is an IAS officer from 2014 batch, holding the rank of 741 in the Jammu and Kashmir cadre. He serves as the Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and CEO of Srinagar Smart City Ltd.

Mufti Bashir-ud-din Farooqi was an Indian Muslim scholar and jurist who served as grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir from 1960 to 2012.

Abdul Ghani Azhari, also known as Abdul Ghani Shah al-Shashi, was an Indian Muslim scholar and historian who served as the head-professor of the University of Kashmir's Arabic department. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir Uloom and the Al-Azhar University. He authored Qadim Tarikh-e-Gujjar, a book detailing the history of Gujjars.
