Michael A. Costello (born 5 May,1965) is an American politician and former State Representative who represented the first district of Essex County,Massachusetts from 2003 to 2014 in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. [1] [2]
Costello earned a Bachelor of Science from Salem State University in 1989 and earned a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1996.[ citation needed ]
After graduating from Salem State,Costello volunteered with the Catholic Diocese of St. Thomas. He later served as program director for the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Association of Boston. While attending Suffolk University Law School,he worked for New Hampshire’s Office of the Public Defender. After earning his juris doctor in 1996,Costello served as an assistant district attorney in Essex County under Kevin M. Burke.[ citation needed ]
Costello was elected a councilor-at-large to the Newburyport City Council in 1997. In 1998,he worked as field director for Congressman John F. Tierney’s campaign,and later served as chief of staff to State Senator Joan Menard.[ citation needed ]
Costello was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in November 2002 and served six terms representing the First Essex District,including Newburyport,Amesbury,and Salisbury.[ citation needed ] In 2007,the Massachusetts Bar Association named him Legislator of the Year. [3]
He resigned effective 15 September 2014 to resume his legal career. [4] Costello is a partner at Smith,Costello &Crawford in Salem,Massachusetts. [5]
