Michael A. Costello (born 5 May,1965) is an American politician and former State Representative who represented the first district of Essex County,Massachusetts from 2003 to 2014 in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. [1] [2]
Costello earned a Bachelor of Science from Salem State University in 1989. [3]
He earned a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1996. [4]
After graduating from Salem State,Costello volunteered with the Catholic Diocese of St. Thomas. [5] He later served as program director for the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Association of Boston. [6] While attending Suffolk University Law School,he worked for New Hampshire’s Office of the Public Defender. [7]
After earning his juris doctor in 1996,Costello served as an assistant district attorney in Essex County under Kevin M. Burke. [8]
Costello was elected a councilor-at-large to the Newburyport City Council in 1997. [9] In 1998,he worked as field director for Congressman John F. Tierney’s campaign, [10] and later served as chief of staff to State Senator Joan Menard. [11]
Costello was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in November 2002 and served six terms representing the First Essex District,including Newburyport,Amesbury,and Salisbury. [12]
In 2007,the Massachusetts Bar Association named him Legislator of the Year. [13]
He resigned effective 15 September 2014 to join a law firm. [14]
