The ISSF World Shooting Championships are governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. World Shooting Championships began in 1897, after the successful 1896 Summer Olympics, and although the ISSF was not founded until 1907, these early competitions are still seen by the organization as the beginning of a continuous row of championships. By this logic, the 2006 competition in Zagreb was called the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships. These championships, including all ISSF shooting events, are held every four years since 1954. For the shotgun events only, there is an additional World Championship competition in odd-numbered years. These extra competitions are not numbered. In running target, there will be World Championships in Olympic years.
The men's 50 metre rifle three positions competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics was held on 22 August at the Markópoulo Olympic Shooting Centre near Athens, Greece.
Men's 50 metre rifle prone was one of the thirteen shooting events at the 1988 Summer Olympics. It was the first Olympic three positions competition to feature final shooting. Miroslav Varga equalled the world record with a perfect 600 in the qualification round, and retained half of his two-point pre-final lead until the end of the competition.

Rolf Martin Anker Hagen was a Norwegian sport shooter who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Participating in two events, he finished 13th in a field of 44 shooters in the 50 metre rifle prone competition and 30th among 44 shooters in the 50 metre rifle three positions competition. A native of Oslo, he also attended the 1954 ISSF World Shooting Championships, where he brought home four medals from the team tournament: silver in the 50 metre free rifle prone and standing 40 shots events and bronze in the 50 metre free rifle kneeling 40 shots and 50 metre rifle three positions events.
Torben Grimmel is a Danish sport shooter. Specialising in the ISSF 50m prone rifle event, Grimmel won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was European Junior Champion in 1995. As of 2023 he has won fourteen ISSF World Cup medals, and two ISSF World Cup finals.
Jonathan Hammond is a British sport shooter, who has competed for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the Olympics. He is currently the head coach of the rifle team at the West Virginia University.
Péter Sidi is a Hungarian sport shooter. He has been world champion in the 50 m rifle 3 positions, as well as winning silver medals in the 300 m rifle prone and the men's 10 metre air rifle. He has also won bronze medals in the 50 metre rifle 3 positions and the 50 m rifle prone team event. He currently holds the qualification world record in 10 m Air Rifle.
Cyril Graff is a French sport shooter. He was born in Nancy. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he placed fourth in 50 metre rifle three positions. He also came 46th in the 50 metre rifle prone event.
Michael McPhail is an American rifle shooter. He won a gold medal in the 50 metre rifle prone event at the 2011 Pan American Games. He competed in the 50 metre rifle prone event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he placed 9th.
Bruce Meredith is a sport shooter who competes for the U.S. Virgin Islands in international competition. He competed in rifle shooting events at the Summer Olympics in 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2000. He was the oldest athlete to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He won the silver medal in the 50 metre rifle prone competition at the 1995 Pan American Games.
Bill Meek is an American sport shooter. He competed in the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996. In 1992, he placed ninth in the men's 50 metre rifle prone event; in 1996, he placed eighth in the men's 50 metre rifle prone event.
Hubert Bichler is a German sport shooter. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the men's 50 metre rifle three positions event, in which he tied for 17th place, and the men's 50 metre rifle prone event, in which he placed fourth.

Andreas Wolfram was a German sport shooter. He was born in Leipzig. He competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in the men's 50 metre rifle three positions event, in which he placed tenth; the men's 50 metre rifle prone event, in which he tied for 15th place; and the men's 10 metre air rifle event, in which he placed eighth.
Eduard Papirov is an Israeli former Olympic sport shooter.
Yair Davidovitz is an Israeli former Olympic sport shooter, and in 1984 matched the world record of a perfect score of 400 in the Men's Small-Bore Rifle, Prone, 50 metres.
