Michael Blackburn (born 27 May 1970 in Sydney) is an Australian Olympic medallist, sailor and coach. He is well known for his crossing of Bass Strait in a Laser dinghy. He did so on 9 March 2005 in a record time (for sailing) of 13 hours 1 minute.
In March 2005, he was ranked 3rd in the world in the Laser, behind Robert Scheidt of Brazil and Paul Goodison of Great Britain, and ahead of Mark Mendelblatt of the United States. [1]
Blackburn also won the 2006 Laser World Championships in Jeju, Korea. He placed 9th at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He won a bronze medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Blackburn has coached three Gold medalists in three Olympics: He was coach of Australian Olympic Gold medalist Tom Slingsby in the Laser class at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He followed this by coaching Tom Burton to gold in the Laser class at the 2016 Summer Olympics. [2] [3] In 2021, he coached Matt Wearn to Gold in the Laser class at the 2020 Summer Olympics. [4]
In 2016 and 2019, he was named Coach of the Year at the Australian Institute of Sport Performance Awards. [5] [6]
Outside of sailing, Blackburn has a PhD in Human Movement Studies and was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. [7]
Petria Ann Thomas, is an Australian swimmer and Olympic gold medallist and a winner of 15 national titles. She was born in Lismore, New South Wales, and grew up in the nearby town of Mullumbimby.
Robert Scheidt is a Brazilian sailor who has won two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze from five Olympic Games and a Star Sailors League Final. He is one of the most successful sailors at Olympic Games and one of the most successful Brazilian Olympic athletes, being one of only two to earn five medals along with fellow sailor Torben Grael, and only behind the six medals of Rebeca Andrade. He is the only Brazilian sailor to win medals in both dinghy and keelboat classes.
Fernando Echávarri Erasun is a professional yachtsman in the Olympic Tornado class. Teaming with crew Antón Paz Blanco, he became the Spanish, European, World Champion, ISAF Sailor of the year in 2005, Olympic gold medallist at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games held in Qingdao.
William Ryan is an Australian sailor and an Olympic champion and five time World champion in the men's 470 event with Mathew Belcher.
Jennifer Margaret Armstrong is an Olympic sailor from New Zealand. After competing for her native country at the 1992 Olympics, she moved to Australia in 1996 and won a historic sailing gold for her adopted country at the 2000 Olympics.
Thomas Mark Mikael Johanson is a Finnish sailor and Olympic champion. He won a gold medal in the 49er Class with Jyrki Järvi at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008–2009, he was a crew member on yacht Ericsson 3 and in 2011–12 on yacht PUMA Ocean Racing in the Volvo Ocean Race.
Nathan James Wilmot is a sailor, and a member of the Australian sailing team. He has won five world titles along with teammate Malcolm Page in the 470 class. They also won the Olympic test event in Qingdao in 2007 and were considered favourites to win the 470 event at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Tom Slingsby is an Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing Laser dinghies, where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Slingsby was the strategist for the America's Cup-winning Team Oracle USA in 2013. In 2016 he skippered the winner-of-line honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race line. Following this he skippered the Australian team in the inaugural SailGP competition.

Mathew "Mat" Belcher, is an Australian sailor and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 470 dinghy, who currently competes with crew Will Ryan. In 2011, following World Championship and World Cup success, he and Malcolm Page were shortlisted by the International Sailing Federation for the ISAF World Sailor of the Year Awards. Belcher was selected as the Australian flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics after winning a second gold medal and third successive medal in the 470 class.
