Michael Andrew Caines MBE DL (born 3 January 1969) [1] is an English chef born in Exeter, Devon.
He was head chef of Gidleigh Park in Devon until January 2016. [2] He is currently the chef owner of the Lympstone Manor hotel between Exeter and Exmouth, which holds one Michelin star.
Caines was born in Exeter in 1969 and was adopted by Patricia and Peter Caines, one of six offspring. He studied catering at Exeter College. [3] From 1987 to 1989 he worked at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane in London, followed by three years working under his mentor Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons in Oxfordshire. He then moved to France to study under Bernard Loiseau in Saulieu and Joël Robuchon in Paris.
He became the Head Chef at the one Michelin starred Gidleigh Park in 1994 but lost his right arm in a car accident soon afterwards. [4] In 1999, Gidleigh Park was awarded a second Michelin Star, and in 2001 Caines won Chef of the Year at The Catey Awards. Caines departed Gidleigh Park in January 2016 [5] and was replaced by Michelin-starred chef, Michael Wignall. [6]
Michael Caines Restaurants Ltd was founded in 1999 and the Michael Caines Restaurant opened at the Bristol Marriott Royal in July 2003. However, a meeting with Andrew Brownsword in early 2000 resulted in a partnership and the purchase of the Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter in October 2000. In 2016 the hotel closed as the result of a devastating fire. [7]
Together they developed the ABode Hotels concept. There are 5 hotels in ABode Hotels: Exeter, [8] Canterbury, [9] Glasgow, [10] Manchester, [11] and Chester. [12] Caines was also executive chef for The Bath Priory from 2009 [13] until 2017, a position now held by Michael Nizzero. [14] He was appointed Director of Food & Beverage for Andrew Brownsword Hotels in 2012, [15] a role he held until July 2014. [16]
Caines became involved in catering for the Williams Formula 1 team in 2013 and, as of the 2017 Grand Prix season, is seen regularly in Williams attire in the paddock.[ citation needed ]
Caines and John Burton Race represented the Southwest of England in the BBC television series Great British Menu in 2006. [17] Caines beat the Dartmouth based chef to go on to the final round.
Caines launched The Michael Caines Academy [18] in 2011 at Exeter College. In 2015, Caines resigned from Gidleigh Park and ABode Hotels to pursue other business interests.
In 2016, Caines opened Lympstone Manor, [19] a luxury boutique hotel and restaurant near Exmouth, Devon, which he describes as "the realisation of a dream, my vision of country house hospitality for the 21st Century". He established a vineyard in the estate to produce a house champagne-method sparkling wine. Since its first harvest in 2020, the Triassic Pinot Noir was produced and has scooped a gold medal at the 2023 International Wine Challenge (IWC) and a bronze at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC). [20] October 2023 will see the launch of the Champagne-method sparkling wine the Classic Cuvée.
Caines relaunched The Cove Restaurant, situated in Maenporth near Falmouth in Cornwall, which had been owned and operated by Arty Williams and Annette Rickard for 17 years. The relaunch began on 10 March 2020 and was billed to offer a "relaxed and informal approach to dining that is designed to attract families, locals and holidaymakers alike". However, after less than 2 weeks, on 23 March 2020, the Cove had to temporarily close due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown announcement, although has re-opened since.[ citation needed ]
In addition to his Michelin-starred Lympstone Manor Hotel and Restaurant, Caines owns and operates The Cove Restaurant, the Harbourside Refuge in Porthleven, Mickeys Beach Bar and Restaurant in Exmouth, and Cafe Patisserie Glacerie. [21]
Caines lives near Exeter in mid-Devon. He has three daughters and a son. As an adopted child and amputee, he supports a number of local agencies and amputee initiatives and charities. [22] [23]
Lympstone is a village and civil parish in East Devon in the English county of Devon. It has a population of 1,754. There is a harbour on the estuary of the River Exe, lying at the outlet of Wotton Brook between cliffs of red breccia. The promontory to the north of the harbour is topped by a flat pasture, Cliff Field, that is managed by the National Trust and used for football matches and other local events.

Gidleigh Park is a hotel and restaurant located in Gidleigh, near Chagford, Devon, England. Chris Eden joined as Executive Head Chef in September 2019, following 12 years as Head Chef at Driftwood in Portscatho, Cornwall, which has held a Michelin star from 2012 to 2019. The hotel belongs to Andrew Brownsword Hotels which was named AA Hotel Group of the Year 2017–18.

Clare Smyth is a Northern Irish chef. She is the Chef Patron of three Michelin starred Core by Clare Smyth which opened in 2017. Previously she was Chef Patron at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay from 2012 to 2016, won the Chef of the Year award in 2013, and achieved a perfect score in the 2015 edition of the Good Food Guide. Smyth has also appeared on television shows such as Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen. Smyth also notably catered at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding.
Martin Hadden is a British chef, who won a Michelin star at both Ockenden Manor and The Priory House. He was the winner of the Roux Scholarship in 1989, and after leaving the kitchen at the Priory House in 2003 he went on to become Executive Chef for the Historic Sussex Hotels group.
The Restaurant Marco Pierre White, also known as The Restaurant, Restaurant Marco Pierre White and later Oak Room Marco Pierre White, was a restaurant run by chef proprietor Marco Pierre White. The Restaurant was opened at the Hyde Park Hotel, London, on 14 September 1993, after White left his previous restaurant, Harveys. Following the move, the kitchen staff was more than doubled in number, and White used Pierre Koffmann's La Tante Claire as a template to pursue his third Michelin star. This was awarded in the 1995 Michelin guide. White then moved the restaurant to the Le Méridien Piccadilly Hotel, London, in 1997, taking on the listed Oak Room as the main dining room. He sought a further rating of five red forks and spoons in the guide, to gain the highest possible rating for the restaurant. It gained this award in the following guide.
The Royal Clarence Hotel is a former hotel in Cathedral Yard, Exeter, Devon, England. It is often described as the first property in England to be called a hotel; however, The German Hotel, London, was described in this way in 1710, so it is probably the second. Since 2005 the 53-bedroom hotel was branded as ABode Exeter.
Peel's Restaurant is situated in Hampton Manor, Hampton-in-Arden. It currently holds one Michelin star and four AA Rosettes. Hampton Manor is a Grade II listed building. Originally the family home of Frederick Peel, son of Prime Minister Robert Peel, the Manor was acquired by hoteliers Derrick and Janet Hill in March 2008. Under the stewardship of their son, James, and daughter in law Fjona, today it runs as a Restaurant with Rooms.
The Square was a London fine dining restaurant, opened on 13 December 1991 in St James's. Since its opening, it had been co-owned by chef Phil Howard and wine expert Nigel Platts-Martin. It also earned its first Michelin star in 1994 and retained it from then on. After relocating to Mayfair in February 1997, The Square won a second Michelin star in 1998, which it retained until 2016, the same year when Howard and Platts-Martin sold the restaurant to a company held by Marlon Abela. It regained its first Michelin star in 2017. It closed on 31 January 2020, causing the restaurant to lose its star the following year.
Richard Alan Shepherd (1945–2022) was a chef who won a Michelin star at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge – one of the first British chefs to win this accolade. He took charge of Langan's Brasserie and expanded it into a successful group of restaurants. He was influential in the development of the hospitality profession in the UK and was recognised and honoured as such.
