Michael Alfred Chaney AO (born in 1950 in Perth, Western Australia) is an Australian businessman and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia.

Biography

A son of Fred Chaney, a minister in the Menzies government and brother to Fred Chaney, a former Deputy Liberal leader, he attended Aquinas College, Perth.

Chaney graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration in 1972 and 1980 respectively. [1] He attended the six-week Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1992. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Western Australia.

Chaney was chairman of the National Australia Bank from 2005 to 2015, Chairman of Woodside Petroleum until 2016 and has been chairman of Wesfarmers since 2013, a Director of the Centre for Independent Studies, and the former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, between 2005 and 2017. [2] He was a director of BHP from 1995 to 2005 and a member of the JPMorgan Chase International Council from 2004 to 2015.

Chaney was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia on 14 June 2004 for service to the business sector through innovative leadership and management strategies, and to the community through involvement with and support for a broad range of artistic, cultural and scientific organisations. [3]

Frederick Michael Chaney, AO is a former Australian politician who was deputy leader of the Liberal Party from 1989 to 1990 and served as a minister in the Fraser Government. He was a Senator for Western Australia from 1974 to 1990, and then served a single term in the House of Representatives from 1990 to 1993.

Trevor Eastwood AM was the CEO of the large Australian corporation Wesfarmers Ltd from 1984 to 1992 and its chairman from 2002 to 2008. After graduating BEng at the University of Western Australia, he joined Wesfarmers in 1963 as a cadet engineer and was associated with the company for over 45 years. He also served as chancellor of Curtin University and helped establish the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, which was later renamed the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in his honour.
