Michael D. Hayes is a Republican member of the Michigan State Transportation Commission and former member of the Michigan House of Representatives.
A native of Owosso,Hayes graduated from Central Michigan University with both a bachelor's and master's degree. He was elected Midland County Clerk in 1976 and served one term before being elected to the House in 1980. Hayes was re-elected three times and was succeeded by Dave Camp. [1]
After leaving the Legislature,Hayes joined the Dow Chemical Company and worked there in several capacities over two decades,retiring as vice president of executive relations. In late 2011,Governor Rick Snyder appointed Hayes to the Michigan State Transportation Commission and to the authority overseeing the Gordie Howe International Bridge. [2]
Hayes helped bring the Great Lakes Loons to Midland,and serves as vice president and secretary of the Michigan Baseball Foundation. He is also president and CEO of the Midland Center for the Arts and serves on several community boards. [3]
Hayes was a delegate to the 1988 Republican National Convention which nominated George H. W. Bush for President of the United States. [4]

The 1876 United States presidential election was the 23rd quadrennial presidential election,held on Tuesday,November 7,1876. Incumbent Republican president Ulysses S. Grant declined to run for a third term,so the party chose Rutherford B. Hayes,the governor of Ohio,as its nominee. The Democratic Party nominated New York governor Samuel J. Tilden as their nominee. It was one of the most contentious presidential elections in American history. Its resolution involved negotiations between the Republicans and Democrats,resulting in the Compromise of 1877,and on March 2,1877,the counting of electoral votes by the House and Senate occurred,confirming Hayes as President. It was the second of five U.S. presidential elections in which the winner did not win a plurality of the national popular vote. This is the first time it happened since 1824,and the first time that a candidate won an overall majority in the popular vote but did not win the presidency.
