Michael Wutky (1739 - 28 September 1822/23) was an Austrian landscape painter in the Rococo style who specialized in Italian scenes. [1]
Wutky was born in Krems an der Donau, Austria. [2] [3] In 1759, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, with Martin van Meytens. [4] He was originally a history painter, but was not very successful. In 1770, he became a member of the Vienna Academy [3] and went to Italy on its behalf. Once there, he turned to landscape painting, which proved to be his true forté. [5]
Wutky spent six years in Italy, mainly in Rome, from 1781 to 1787. [3] He is best known for the paintings he produced during a stay in Naples. Mount Vesuvius was especially active at that time, and he took the opportunity to capture close-up scenes of the eruptions and lava flows. [4] Accompanied by the English diplomat and volcanologist Sir William Hamilton, he even made risky trips close to the volcano's crater. [6] [7]
He later spent some time painting the ruins in Rome, then returned to Vienna, where he became a Professor at the academy. He revisited Italy for a short time in 1805, to collect new material. [5] [3] His stepbrother, Franz Neumann (1744-1816), the Director of the "Royal Coin and Antiquities Gallery", left him 40,000 Florins, but he continued to earn his living by painting. Many years earlier, Lord Bristol had offered to buy two of his Italian landscapes for 1,200 Ducats apiece, but died before the sale was completed. [4]
His work is included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, [8] the Kunstmuseum Basel [9] and the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest. [10]
Pieter Bruegelthe Elder was among the most significant artists of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting, a painter and printmaker, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes ; he was a pioneer in presenting both types of subject as large paintings.

Jusepe de Ribera was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and the singular Diego Velázquez, are regarded as the major artists of Spanish Baroque painting. Referring to a series of Ribera exhibitions held in the late 20th century, Philippe de Montebello wrote "If Ribera's status as the undisputed protagonist of Neapolitan painting had ever been in doubt, it was no longer. Indeed, to many it seemed that Ribera emerged from these exhibitions as not simply the greatest Neapolitan artist of his age but one of the outstanding European masters of the seventeenth century." Jusepe de Ribera has also been referred to as José de Ribera, Josep de Ribera, and was called Lo Spagnoletto by his contemporaries and early historians.

Josef Rebell was a German/Austrian painter, born on 11 January 1787 in Vienna. He was a pupil of Michael Wutky at the Vienna Academy. In 1809 he travelled through Switzerland and proceeded thence to Milan, where for two years he resided at the Court of Eugene Beauharnais. Later on he went to Rome, and from 1811 to 1815 he was at the Court of Murat at Naples. Was appointed Director of the Belvedere Gallery at Vienna. He painted Italian landscapes, three examples of his work being in the Vienna Museum. Others are in the Munich Pinakothek, the Berlin Gallery, and the Parma Gallery. He died in Dresden on 18 December 1828.
Mato Celestin Medović was a Croatian painter. Best known for his large paintings depicting historical scenes, and his series of colourful landscapes and seascapes of his native Dalmatia, Medović is one of the earliest modern Croatian painters.
Menci Clement Crnčić was a Croatian painter, printmaker, teacher and museum director. He studied painting and drawing in Vienna and Munich, and trained in graphic arts in Vienna, studying etching and engraving. He was the first artist in the Croatian graphic tradition to abandon a strictly linear style and use tonal variation to create contrasting areas of light and shade.

Gabriele Smargiassi was an Italian landscape painter and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.
Jan Nepomucen Głowacki was a Polish realist painter of the Romantic era, regarded as the most outstanding landscape painter of the early 19th century in Poland under the foreign partitions. Głowacki studied painting at the Kraków School of Fine Arts and later at the academies of Prague and Vienna, as well as Rome and Munich. He returned to Kraków in 1828, and became a teacher of painting and drawing. From 1842 he served as a professor in the Faculty of Landscape Painting at the School of Fine Arts. His work can be found at the National Museum of Poland and its branches. Some of his work was looted by Nazi Germany in World War II and has never been recovered.
Adrien Manglard was a French painter, draughtsman, and engraver. He was a skilled marine painter, who was able to rapidly advance his career in Rome thanks to his compositional skills, selling paintings to clients such as the Rospigliosi family, Victor Amadeus II, King of Sardinia, and Philip, the Duke of Parma. The latter alone commissioned more than 140 paintings from Manglard.
L'ultimo giorno di Pompei is an opera in two acts composed by Giovanni Pacini to an Italian libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola. It premiered to great success at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 19 November 1825 followed by productions in the major opera houses of Italy, Austria, France, and Portugal. When Pacini's popularity declined in the mid-19th century, the opera was all but forgotten until 1996 when it received its first performance in modern times at the Festival della Valle d'Itria in Martina Franca. L'ultimo giorno di Pompei influenced either directly or indirectly several other 19th-century works, most notably Karl Bryullov's 1833 painting, The Last Day of Pompeii.
