Michael Xavier Voon (MXV; born in Ipoh, Perak) is a multi-faceted art practitioner based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is known for directing, coaching and choreographing for TV and stage such as Malaysian Idol , One in a Million , So You Think You Can Dance , [1] Dreamgirls, Shout! The Mod Musical, HipHopera the Musical, Realiti (8TV) and trained Jaclyn Victor (the first Malaysian Idol and first Ikon Malaysia), Faizal Tahir, Dina, Dayang and Daniel Lee.

Voon burst onto the dance scene in the early 90s, after having received his training in the United States. He borrowed techniques from Eastern, Western and other cultures to create new multicultural expressions. His dance structure and form is more abstract or realistic rather than being rooted in the Malaysian culture. [2]

Like any other Idol show, the winner is decided by public votes. The Malaysian Idol series has gained a following in Malaysia from people of all ages partly due to their interest in American Idol which had been introduced a few years prior. Dikir barat

Dikir barat is a musical form, native to the Malay Peninsula, that involves singing in groups—often in a competitive setting. Dikir barat may be performed either with a percussion instrumental accompaniment, or with no instruments at all. The dance is partially similar in movement to Endang except that actions of hand clapping are further incorporated to produce rhythm. The origins of dikir barat are unclear; it is found in both Malaysia and Thailand, and today the Malaysia National Department for Culture and Arts actively promotes it as an important part of Malaysian national culture.
