Michal Novinski (born Michal Nicik, 1971 in Slovakia) is a music composer best known for his film scores and theatre music. He received two Czech Lion Awards for scores for the films Kooky and In the Shadow .

Career

Novinski's career started when he was 19 with a commission from the Slovak National Theatre for a ballet The Light in the Darkness (Slovak: Svetlo v tme), directed and choreographed by Ondrej Šoth. [1] The success of this project was followed by a collaboration with the Slovak mime artist Milan Sládek. Novinski eventually worked with prestigious theaters in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary, including the National Theatre in Prague and Vígszínház Theatre in Budapest. [2]

He was awarded Czech Film and Television Academy Award Czech Lion for Best Music for the film Kooky (Czech : Kuky se vrací, 2010), [3] directed by the Oscar-winning director Jan Svěrák. [4] He also won Slovak Film and Television Academy Sun in a Net Award in 2010 for the Best Original Score for Jiří Chlumský’s film Broken Promise (Slovak : Nedodržaný sľub, 2009) [5] and in 2014 for the Best Original Score for David Ondříček's film In the Shadow (Czech : Ve stínu, 2012), together with Jan P. Muchow. In 2016 he won the FICX Award for the Best Original Score for the film The Teacher (2016) at the 54. Gijon International Film Festival, Spain.

Novinski’s recent works include original score for the critically acclaimed film In the Shadow (Czech: Ve stínu, 2012) [6] [7] [8] by David Ondříček, co-written with his longtime collaborator Jan P. Muchow. The film received the Czech Film Critics’ Award 2012 and Czech Golden Lion Award 2012 for the best original score, among other prizes. [9] [10]

<i>Kooky</i> 2010 Czech action comedy film

Kooky is a 2010 Czech action comedy film directed by Jan Svěrák. The film combines techniques of puppet animation, stop motion and live action. It tells the story of a six-year-old asthmatic boy whose parents throw his favorite toy away, an old teddy bear named Kooky. The boy, however, secretly sneaks out of the house at night, to retrieve Kooky from the garbage can and bring him back home. Due to that, the boy gets ill. In his feverish dreams, Kooky comes to life in the landfill, escapes into a mysterious forest and begins its journey amongst the rough-and-ready creatures of the forest.

Some categories became open for Television and Web works as a result of increase in Television work quality.

<i>Shadow Country</i> (film) 2020 Czech historical drama film

Shadow Country is a 2020 Czech historical drama film directed by Bohdan Sláma. It is inspired by Tušť massacre from May 1945. It chronicles life of a small village from 1930s to 1950s. The film premiered at the 2020 Summer Film School Uherské Hradiště and is set to release to theatres on 10 September 2020. The film won six Czech Lion Awards including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay.
