Michelle Axtman is an American politician and United States Air Force pilot serving as a member of the North Dakota Senate for the 7th district. She assumed office on December 1,2022.
Axtman attended Century High School in Bismarck,North Dakota. [1] She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geospatial science from the United States Air Force Academy in 2009 and a Master of Science in project management from the University of Mary in 2013. [2]
Axtman served as an active duty pilot in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve Command for 12 years,reaching the rank of major. [3] Since 2021,she has served as the executive officer to the mission support group commander of the 934th Airlift Wing. She was elected to the North Dakota Senate in November 2022. [4]
Pamela Ann Melroy is an American retired United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut serving as the deputy administrator of NASA. She served as pilot on Space Shuttle missions STS-92 and STS-112 and commanded mission STS-120 before leaving the agency in August 2009. After serving as deputy program manager of Space Exploration Initiatives with Lockheed Martin,Melroy joined the Federal Aviation Administration in 2011,where she was a senior technical advisor and director of field operations for the FAA's Office of Commercial Space Transportation.

Incumbent three-term Republican U.S. Senator John Thune,who is the Senate Minority Whip,was first elected in 2004,defeating Democratic incumbent Tom Daschle,the then-Senate Minority Leader. He ran for reelection to a fourth term. The Democratic nominee was 26-year Navy,Air Force JAG Corps Veteran,and former college professor Brian Bengs. Thune was ultimately reelected.
