Michelle De La Isla (born March 19,1976) is an American politician who served as the mayor of Topeka,Kansas from 2018 to 2022. She previously served on the Topeka City Council from 2013 to 2018. De La Isla was the city's first Latina and single mother to serve as mayor. [1] She was the Democratic nominee for Kansas's 2nd congressional district in the 2020 election,but lost.
Born in New York City,De La Isla grew up mostly in Puerto Rico. She attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez before moving to Wichita,Kansas in 2000. She experienced homelessness and gave birth to a child as a teenager. [2] In 2001,she graduated from Wichita State University with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She received an MBA in leadership and human resources from Fort Hays State University and is in the MPA program for mid-career professionals at Harvard University. [3] [4] [5]
De La Isla worked as a teacher for Upward Bound.[ citation needed ] In 2005,she moved to Topeka,Kansas,and joined Housing and Credit Counseling,Inc. as its community relations and Spanish services coordinator,and later,its chief financial officer.
In 2013,De La Isla ran for Topeka City Council and was elected to represent the fifth district. She served as deputy mayor to mayor Larry Wolgast in 2016. De La Isla announced her candidacy for mayor on April 11,2017 after Wolgast announced he would not seek reelection. [6]
On November 7,2017,De La Isla won the Topeka mayoral race by a margin of 501 votes. [7] Before the election,De La Isla also announced that she would continue her employment at Evergy,which also makes her the first mayor to hold additional employment during her tenure.
As mayor,De La Isla serves on the Washburn University Board of Regents,the Board of the Joint Economic Development Organization,and as Tri-Chair of GO Topeka’s Momentum 2022 collective action plan for Topeka and Shawnee County.
On January 6,2020,De La Isla announced she was running as a Democrat to represent Kansas's 2nd congressional district. [8] On August 4,De La Isla won the Democratic primary to advance to the November 3,2020 general election. She was defeated by Kansas Treasurer Jake LaTurner in the November general election. [9]
On March 19,2021,De La Isla announced that she will not run for another term as mayor. [10]
In September,2023,De La Isla was hired [11] as chief executive at Boston-based nonprofit Hack.Diversity.
De La Isla has two daughters and one son. [2]
The New Progressive Party is a political party in Puerto Rico that advocates statehood. The PNP is one of the two major parties in Puerto Rico with significant political strength and currently holds both the seat of the governor and of the resident commissioner.
Jenniffer Aydin González Colón is a Puerto Rican politician who is the governor-elect of Puerto Rico and currently serves as the 20th Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico. González has served in leadership positions in the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico (PNP) and in the Republican Party of the United States. Pedro Rafael Pierluisi Urrutia is a Puerto Rican politician and lawyer currently serving as governor of Puerto Rico since January 2,2021. He has previously served as secretary of justice,resident commissioner,acting secretary of state,de facto governor of Puerto Rico and as private attorney for Puerto Rico's fiscal oversight board under the Puerto Rico Oversight,Management,and Economic Stability Act. He is a member of the New Progressive Party and the Democratic Party of the United States.
María Eloisa Meléndez Altieri also known as Mayita,is a Puerto Rican politician who served as the mayor of the city of Ponce,Puerto Rico,from 2009 to 2021. Meléndez Altieri was elected during the Puerto Rican general elections of 2008,becoming the first woman elected to the office in Ponce's political history. She was also the first mayor of a party other than the Popular Democratic Party in Ponce since 1989,when Rafael Cordero Santiago became mayor. This is Mayita's second candidacy in politics on the island and her first electoral win. In the Puerto Rico's 2004 general election,Mayita presented her candidacy for a senatorial seat representing Puerto Rico's 5th district,but lost in her bid for the position. Meléndez Altieri lost her bid for reelection in the 2020 general elections to Luis Irizarry Pabon from the Popular Democratic Party.

Larry E. Wolgast is an American politician who served as Mayor of Topeka,Kansas from 2013 to 2018. He previously served as Kansas Secretary of Human Resources during the administration of Governor John W. Carlin.
The 2017 United States elections were held,in large part,on Tuesday,November 7,2017. This off-year election featured gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey,as well as state legislative elections in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature and in the Virginia House of Delegates. Numerous citizen initiatives,mayoral races,and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Special elections were also held for one seat of the U.S. Senate,representing Alabama,and six seats of the U.S. House of Representatives. Incumbent New Progressive Party Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia ran for re-election to a second term in office,but lost the PNP primary to Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon. This election is historic as it marks the first time since 1952 in which a candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party came runner-up in a gubernatorial race,the first time since 1964 in which the incumbent governing party was re-elected after two terms in office,the second time Puerto Rico has elected a female governor,with the first time being in 2000 with Sila María Calderón. This election also saw the Popular Democratic Party lose control of the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico and finish third for the first time in its entire history in a gubernatorial election,albeit retaining a majority of mayoral races and its candidate for Resident Commissioner,Pablo Jose Hernandez,won in a landslide.
Michael Padilla is an American politician who is the mayor of Topeka,Kansas,serving since January 2022. Prior to becoming mayor,Padilla was a member of the Topeka Police Department for 33 years and served one term on Topeka's city council.
