Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin, born Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov and known during his lifetime by the pen name Nikolai Shchedrin, was a major Russian writer and satirist of the 19th century. He spent most of his life working as a civil servant in various capacities. After the death of poet Nikolay Nekrasov, he acted as editor of a Russian literary magazine Otechestvenniye Zapiski until the Tsarist government banned it in 1884. In his works Saltykov mastered both stark realism and satirical grotesque merged with fantasy. His most famous works, the family chronicle novel The Golovlyov Family (1880) and the political novel The History of a Town (1870) became important works of 19th-century fiction, and Saltykov is regarded as a major figure of Russian literary Realism.
Brahim Boulami is a Moroccan athlete who set two world records in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, 7:55.28 and 7:53.17. The latter was overturned because he tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug EPO. Boulami was banned for two years in 2002 after the positive test. His time of 7:55.28 in the 3000 meter steeplechase from the year before the positive test is currently the fourth fastest ever run.

Philip Yates Coleman was a middle- and long-distance runner from the United States. He was born in Champaign, Illinois. He won the gold medal in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 1959 Pan American Games. Coleman attended Southern Illinois University (1948 - 1952, spent two years in the Army and becoming inter service steeplechase champion. He attended graduate school at the University of Illinois, meanwhile competing for The University of Chicago Track Club. He was a member of the 1956 and 1960 Olympic teams. He retired from running in 1960, wrote an article for Sports Illustrated “Idea of an Amateur, 1962, for which he was awarded the Mohammed Taher trophy by the International Olympic committee. With his thesis, “Mark Twain’s Desperate Naturalism” completed, he received a PhD in Literature in 1964. He taught literature and served as dean at California University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1998.
Jeffrey ("Jeff") Mason Fishback is a retired middle- and long-distance runner from the United States. He won the gold medal in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 1963 Pan American Games in Brazil.
Mikhail Zhelev was a Bulgarian athlete, known primarily for running the steeplechase. He competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics, finishing 6th and in the 1972 Summer Olympics, finishing 12th. He set his personal record of 8:25.0 while winning the race at the 1969 European Athletics Championships.

The women's event is the most recent addition to the programme, having been added at the 2008 Olympics. It is the most prestigious steeplechase track race at elite level.

He entered university at both Princeton and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He went on to compete in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 1924 Summer Olympics.
Melvin Joseph Dalton was an American steeplechase runner. He competed in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 1928 Summer Olympics.
Miguel Santiago "Mike" Roche is an American middle-distance runner. He competed in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Roche was a 1975 NCAA All-American in the 3000 steeplechase while attending Rutgers University. He was ranked in the top 10 US Steeplechasers from 1975 to 1980. In 1978, Roche was a member of the silver medal-winning US International Cross Country team competing in Glasgow, Scotland. On July 4, 1978, Roche beat 12,000 runners at the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, GA, setting a new course record (28:59)in the process. In March 1981, Roche established a new American Record for 10 miles with a time of 46:57 at Cherry Hill, NJ. The record would stand for 2 years.
