The Military Police of Armenia (Armenian : Ռազմական ոստիկանություն, romanized: Rrazmakan vostikanut’yun) is the military police branch of the Armed Forces of Armenia under the command of the Ministry of Defence. [2] In the MoD, it is separate from the central apparatus. It is governed by the RA Law on Military Police.

History

The Military Police was established on 5 May 1992, [3] [4] by order of Minister of Defense Vazgen Sargsyan. It had no special status until 2007. [5] That year, a law to define the status of a Military Police was adopted by the National Assembly. Military Police bylaws were approved by the Government on 25 December 2008.

Activities

In 2018, the Armenian Defense Ministry announced that ahead of the 2018 army draft, the military police would be posted at Zvartnots International Airport to help arriving draftees from the diaspora in being able to fulfill their army service. [6] Similar postings were also conducted at Shirak Airport. [7]

Peacekeeping

The military police is in control of the 12th Peacekeeping Brigade, which also known as the Blue Berets due to its similarities to the Armenian Airborne Forces. [8] It specializes in peacekeeping in foreign countries as part of international initiatives. It has collaborated in several international missions with the West, including missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. [9] In 2019, a Military Police peacekeeping platoon participated in a NATO-sponsored training held in Armenia. [10]

The Army Chaplaincy Program of the Armenian Church is a 50-member officer unit within the Armenian Armed Forces that provides ordained military chaplains and clergy to personnel of the Armenian Army. All members of the unit come from the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is jointly funded and sponsored by the Ministry of Defence of Armenia and the church. All army chaplains are commissioned officers in the armed forces who hold a military rank. They organize various religious programs in the military, including delivering lectures and prayers. It takes part in many ceremonies such as the induction of cadets of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University. The current head of the military clergy is Father Movses Vardapet Sargsyan.

The National Defense Research University (NDRU) (Armenian: Ազգային պաշտպանության հետազոտական համալսարան) is a higher educational institution of the Armed Forces of Armenia. It is roughly the equivalent of to the American National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Onik Gasparyan</span> Armenian Colonel-General

Onik Viktori Gasparyan is an Armenian Colonel-General who served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces from 8 June 2020 until his dismissal on 10 March 2021. Gasparyan was dismissed after calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 25 February 2021 along with more than 40 other high-ranking Armenian military officers.

The 12th Peacekeeping Brigade is a military unit of the Armed Forces of Armenia. Sometimes referred to as the Blue Berets due to its role, it solely specializes in peacekeeping in foreign countries as part of international initiatives. It is commanded by Colonel Arsen Mangasaryan. In early 2016, Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan said that he considers the brigade to be the "basis for the establishment of a professional army".

The 4th Army Corps is a regional military formation the Armenian Army, located in the capital of the Vayots Dzor Province.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia is the military staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia. The current Chief of the General Staff is Major General Edvard Asryan. The headquarters of the General Staff is located on 5 Bagrevand Street in the Nor Nork District of Yerevan.
