Mimoza Kusari-Lila (born 16 October 1975) is an Albanian Kosovar politician for The Alternative (Albanian:Alternativa). She was the deputy prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo and minister of trade and industry from 2011 to 2013 and the mayor of Gjakova from November 2013 to 2017. [4]
Mimoza Kusari was born on 16 October 1975 in Gjakova. Her father is a pulmonologist and her mother is a teacher of Albanian language and literature in elementary school. Her family lived for a short time in Peja. They returned to Gjakova with their four children in the mid-1980s.
Kusari finished high school at the Hajdar Dushi Gymnasium and then registered in the University of Prishtina,Faculty of Economics. She graduated in management and informations systems,working full-time to fund her studies in a time of economic crisis and political repression. In 1998-1999,when the Kosovo war broke out,she worked for organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). [5]
During the Kosovo war,while working in a refugee camp for the American National Public Radio service in the Republic of Macedonia,she won the Ron Brown Scholarship from the United States Department of State to pursue an MBA in the United States. [6]
During her stay in the US,she continued studies at the Institute of Economics,University of Colorado,and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,where she completed her master's in e-business. During this time she was very active in organizing the student community and showing leadership skills. She founded and was the first president of the Association of Business Women of Duquesne University and was one of three Ron Brown scholarship holders from Eastern Europe invited to participate in the celebration of International Education Week by Secretary of State Madelaine Albright in Washington,D.C. After her studies,she worked as an intern at Bayer Corporation of North America in Pittsburgh in the department of e-sales. [5]
After returning to Kosovo in 2001,she worked for the World Bank and USAID project to support Kosovar businesses. Her leadership and managerial skills were tested while she worked as project manager at the American University in Kosovo Foundation education plan for Kosovo and the establishment of the institution. Her work resulted in the successful opening of the university,now as a leading education institution in Kosovo and the region. [5]
Kusari was exposed to politics and public service in 2003 when she was offered the position of spokesperson and political adviser to then prime minister of Kosovo,Bajram Rexhepi. The first woman to have such a position and impartial in her political beliefs,she was the face and voice of the Kosovo government for more than a year at a time when Kosovo returned to the March 2004 riots. She announced a break from politics at the end of 2004,with her marriage with Arben Lila,and her son being born in the following year. Kusari added her husband's last name to her own and now uses Kusari Lila as her official name.
She restarted political activity as director of the department of energy in the ministry of energy and mines,ad then in the American chamber of commerce in Kosovo,where she as an executive director in 2006-2009. While in the American chamber in Kosovo,in 2009,she finished a four-month research project as the Fulbright Scholarship at Georgetown University,capital research center in Washington,D.C.,focusing on the development of capital markets in the developing world. During her stay,she was invited as a guest speaker to the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars event to introduce substantial development challenges in Kosovo. [7]
In 2009,Kusari Lila made official her candidacy for mayor of Gjakova within the party New Kosovo Alliance (AKR). She was named deputy prime minister of Kosovo and minister of commerce and industry on 23 February 2011, [5] and worked in this capacity until 2 October 2013,when she resigned from all positions in the government of Kosovo because of her commitment to an election campaign for mayor of Gjakova for the second time,this time winning in the second round. [8] She became the first woman mayor in history of Kosovo.
The Democratic League of Kosovo is the oldest and one of the largest political parties in Kosovo.
Lutfi Haziri is the deputy chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo and former mayor of Gjilan. He is a former deputy prime minister and minister of Kosovo for Culture,Youth,Sports and Non-residential Affairs. He headed the delegation of Kosovo in the talks on the political status of Kosovo with Serbia in Vienna,Austria in February 2006.
The University of Pristina is a public university located in Pristina,Kosovo. It is the institution that emerged after the disestablishment of the University of Pristina (1969–1999) as a result of the Kosovo War. The inauguration of the university was a historical occurrence not only for the people of Kosovo,but for the whole Albanian nation. On 15 February,the solemn Parliament session took place,which is also proclaimed as The University of Pristina's Day. In the composition of the newly established University of Pristina were faculties with their headquarters in Pristina:the Faculty of Philosophy,Faculty of Law and Economics,Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine. Now the University of Pristina has 17 faculties,of which 14 are academic faculties and 3 are faculties of applied sciences. Contained within the emblem is a translation of the name into Latin,Universitas Studiorum Prishtiniensis.
Japan–Kosovo relations are foreign relations between Japan and Kosovo. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on February 17,2008,and Japan recognized it on March 18,2008. According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,Japan and Kosovo established diplomatic relations on February 25,2009.
Behgjet Isa Pacolli (Gheg Albanian:[bɛhˈɟɛtpaˈtsoɫi];Serbo-Croatian Latin:Behđet Isa Pacoli;is a Kosovar Albanian politician and businessman who served as the first deputy prime minister of Kosovo and minister of foreign affairs from 2017 to 2019 under the Ramush Haradinaj government. Pacolli is a former president of Kosovo,and served as the first deputy prime minister of Kosovo between 2011 and 2014. Pacolli was one of the signatories of the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence.
Parliamentary elections were held in Kosovo on 12 December 2010,following a vote of no-confidence in the government that brought forward the election. Those were the first elections after the country declared independence.
Isa Mustafa is a retired Kosovar politician. Mustafa was the mayor of Pristina from December 2007 to December 2013 and served as the prime minister of Kosovo between December 2014 and September 2017. He was the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) between 2010 and 2021.
Valon Saraqini is a Macedonian politician of Albanian descent. He served as the Minister of Economy of Macedonia,today known as North Macedonia. A substantial emigration from Kosovo has taken place in various phases during the second half of the 20th century. Mirlinda Kusari Purrini is the founder and executive director of SHE-ERA in Kosovo,a post she has held since September,1999. She is an economist by occupation with a degree in Economics and Finance at the University of Pristina. Mrs. Kusari is active in both business and humanitarian circles with experience in international research and projects.
Xhafer Spahiu was an Albanian politician of the Albanian Party of Labour (PPSh). He was the only Kosovar Albanian of the higher ranks of the Communist Albania leadership after 1948.

Distria Krasniqi is a Kosovar Albanian judoka. She is a two-time Olympic medallist and won the gold medal in the women's 48-kg judo event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the silver medal in the women's 52-kg judo event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Krasniqi is also a two-time World Championships bronze medallist and two-time European champion. In August 2021,she was awarded the Honor of the Nation Decoration of Albania by the President of Albania.
Rozeta Hajdari is a Kosovar Albanian economist and politician,currently serving as minister of industry,entrepreneurship and trade of the Republic of Kosovo. Following a lengthy career with foreign development organizations,she joined the government as a non-partisan minister in 2020.
Sylejman Sylejmani was an Albanian academic and politician. He was a professor of Chemistry at the University of Prishtina,as well as the Education Minister of Gjakova,as well as leader of the Albanian League of Education (LASH). He lead the student protests of Gjakova and was one of the founders of the Democratic League of Kosovo and Kosovo Liberation Army and Kosovo War veteran. He developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as a result of torture endured during before and after the Kosovo War.
Ardian Gjini is a politician in Kosovo. He was a cabinet minister in Kosovo's government from 2005 to 2008,served in the Assembly of Kosovo from 2007 to 2014,and has been the mayor of Gjakova since 2017. Gjini has been a prominent member of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) since the party's formation in 2001.
Driton Çaushi is a politician in Kosovo. He served in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo from 2016 to 2019,initially as a member of Vetëvendosje (VV) and later with the Social Democratic Party of Kosovo (PSD).
