Northwest is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established as Northwestern in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was renamed Northwest in 2003 when the Western and Westfjords constituencies were merged into the Northwestern constituency following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Northwest consists of the regions of Northwestern, Western and Westfjords. The constituency currently elects seven of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2021 parliamentary election it had 21,541 registered electors.

The Ministry of Welfare is an Icelandic cabinet-level ministry founded 1 January 2011. It is the result of the merger of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Security, founded 17 April 1939 as the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Health, founded 20 November 1959. It is responsible for administration and policy making of social affairs, health and social security. The first Minister of Welfare was Guðbjartur Hannesson. As of November 2017, there are two ministers heading the Ministry of Welfare: Ásmundur Einar Daðason, Minister of Social Affairs and Equality, and Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Minister of Health.

Ásmundur Einar Daðason is an Icelandic politician. He was a member of the Althing for the Northwest Constituency from 2009 to 2016 – first for the Left-Green Movement (VG), later for the centrist Progressive Party. He returned to the Althing in 2017. He has also been the leader of the organisation Heimssýn, which gathers Iceland's EU opponents. On November 30, 2017, he became Minister of Social Affairs and Equality. On November 28, 2021, he became Minister of Education and Children.

Guðrún Ögmundsdóttir was an Icelandic politician for the Social Democratic Party and then the Social Democratic Alliance who was an elected member of the Althing representing the Reykjavík North constituency from 1999 to 2007. She also twice served on Reykjavík City Council and was a board member and later chair of UNICEF Iceland between 2016 and 2018. Guðrún had a biography on her written by Halla Gunnarsdóttir that was published in 2010 and she received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Falcon nine years later.
