The Ministry of Works and Transport is a Cabinet level government ministry of Uganda, that is mandated to plan, develop and maintain an economic, efficient and effective transport infrastructure, and transport services by road, rail, water, and air. The ministry is also mandated to manage public works including government structures and promote standards in the construction industry. The ministry is headed by a Cabinet Minister. The current Minister of Works and Transport is Katumba Wamala.

Location

The headquarters of the ministry are located at the corner of Jinja Road and Old Port Bell Road, in Kampala Central Division, in the Industrial Area of Kampala, the capital and largest city in the country. The coordinates of the ministry headquarters are:0°19'04.0"N, 32°35'48.0"E (Latitude:0.317779; Longitude:32.596681). [1]

Overview

As of July, the ministry is involved, through and with its affiliated entities, in several major construction projects including the following:

  1. Construction of Entebbe–Kampala Expressway. The 53 kilometres (33 mi) links Entebbe International Airport with Kampala Northern Bypass Road and with the Kampala neighborhood of Munyonyo, on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. [2] The expressway will have toll booths with limited access. [3]
  2. Expansion and improvement of Entebbe International Airport. The multi-phased expansion is slated to last until 2033 and involves the expansion of the cargo terminal, construction of a new passenger terminal building, construction of new fuel storage facilities, building new multi-story car park, construction of new control tower and strengthening and resealing of current runways. The entire renovation budget is approximately US$586 million. [4]
  3. Expansion of Kampala Northern Bypass Highway to dual carriageway. [5]
  4. Construction of Malaba–Kampala Standard Gauge Railway. [6]
  5. Construction of the New Nile Bridge at Njeru. [7]

The Kampala Northern Bypass Highway, often referred to as the Northern Bypass, is a road in Uganda. It forms a semicircle across the northern suburbs of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The road was constructed to relieve traffic congestion within the city center, allowing cross-country traffic to bypass the city's downtown area.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Entebbe–Kampala Expressway</span> Road in Uganda

The Entebbe–Kampala Expressway, also known as the "Kampala–Entebbe Expressway" or the "Entebbe–Kampala Highway", is a four-lane toll highway in the Central Region of Uganda. The highway links Entebbe International Airport, the country's largest civilian and military airport, to Kampala, the country's capital and largest metropolitan area. Originally, the highway was planned for commissioning in 2016, but because of the delayed works, commissioning was done on 15 June 2018 by Uganda's sitting president, Yoweri Museveni. Recently, the Uganda Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala launched the toll point at Kajjansi along Kampala–Entebbe Road.

Prior to that, from 12 August 2012, until 6 June 2016, he served as the State Minister of Finance for Investments. In the cabinet reshuffle of 24 May 2013, and that of 1 March 2015, he retained his cabinet post. The Kampala–Mpigi Expressway, also Busega–Mpigi Expressway, is a four-lane, dual carriage highway under construction in the Central Region of Uganda, connecting, Kampala, the capital city, and Mpigi, the headquarters of Mpigi District.

Monica Azuba Ntege is a Ugandan engineer and politician. She was the Minister of Works and Transport in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016 replacing John Byabagambi, who became Minister for Karamoja. She was replaced by Katumba Wamala in the cabinet on 14 December 2019.
