Mirza Faizan is an Indian-American aerospace scientist who developed the Ground Reality Information Processing System (GRIPS). [1] [2]

Biography

Faizan attended St Karen’s School, Patna, and graduated from Patna University, followed by work in master of computer application[ citation needed ] at Manipal Institute of Technology, and in embedded systems at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. [2]

He then worked for Defence Research and Development Organisation, Satyam Computers, Honeywell, Airbus-France, and on aerospace projects in the US. [2]

Faizan came to the United States in 2013 on a EB-1 visa. [3] Faizan is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He currently lives in Texas, US. [2]

Mirza Faizan is the inventor of the Ground Reality Information Processing System (GRIPS), a runway safety system. [4] [5] GRIPS was nominated for the Jane’s ATC Award 2014 held in Madrid. [6]

Inventions

Mirza Faizan developed Ground Reality Information Processing System (GRIPS). This system prevents runway incursion and identifies foreign objects and debris on runways in real-time at the time of airplane take-off or landing. [4] [5]

NASA scientists evaluated GRIPS and further recommended it to National Air Traffic Services in the UK. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the national aviation authority of the United States of America, also shortlisted GRIPS among the technologies that prevent runway incursions. [4]

GRIPS was nominated for the Jane’s ATC Award 2014 held in Madrid. [6]

DiscoverSTEM

Mirza Faizan is the founder of DiscoverSTEM program. He started the program in 2016. Mirza Faizan resigned as head of engineering services (USA & Canada) in 2020 at Capgemini to focus full-time on developing the DiscoverSTEM program. [7] [8] [9] [10]

In the DiscoverSTEM program, students are encouraged to follow a five-step program of think, analyze, ideate, create and innovate patentable solutions to real-world problems. DiscoverSTEM program is designed to create the next generation of thinkers, innovators, scientists and entrepreneurs. There are two major parts of the course – foundation and implementation. DiscoverSTEM students have won global innovation competitions. DiscoverSTEM has sent students to Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and Duke University with scholarships totalling $3.5 million. It has produced almost 200 young inventors ages 10 to 18. [10] [14]

Mark E. Dean is an American inventor and computer engineer. He developed the ISA bus, and he led a design team for making a one-gigahertz computer processor chip. He holds three of nine PC patents for being the co-creator of the IBM personal computer released in 1981. In 1995, Dean was named the first ever African-American IBM Fellow.

NTP, Inc. is a Virginia-based patent holding company founded in 1992 by the late inventor Thomas J. Campana Jr. and Donald E. Stout. The company's primary asset is a portfolio of 50 US patents and additional pending US and international patent applications. These patents and patent applications disclose inventions in the fields of wireless email and RF Antenna design. The named inventors include Andrew Andros and Thomas Campana. About half of the US patents were originally assigned to Telefind Corporation, a Florida-based company partly owned by Campana.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was an American nurse and innovator. In 1966, she invented a video home security system along with her husband Albert Brown, an electronics technician. That same year they applied for a patent for their security system. It was granted three years later in 1969. Her innovation impacted the security system. Brown was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She died there on February 2, 1999 at the age of seventy-six.

Patricia Era Bath was an American ophthalmologist and humanitarian. She became the first female member of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, the first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, and the first woman elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was the first African-American to serve as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University. She was also the first African-American woman to serve on staff as a surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was the first African-American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose. A holder of five patents, she founded the non-profit American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in Washington, D.C.

Theodore George "Ted" Paraskevakos is a Greek-American inventor and businessman. Paraskevakos graduated from the Superior College of Electronics in Greece and served for 28 months as communications and electronics instructor in the Hellenic Air Force. He attended a variety of courses for digital engineering in Alabama and in Florida.

Robert William Bower was an American applied physicist. Immediately after receiving his Ph.D. from The California Institute of Technology in 1973, he worked for over 25 years in many different professions: engineer, scientist, professor at University of California, Davis, and as president and CEO of Device Concept Inc. He also served as the president of Integrated Vertical Modules, which focused on three-dimensional, high-density structures. His most notable contribution, however, is his field-effect device with insulated gates—also known as a self-aligned-gate MOSFET, or SAGFET. Bower patented this design in 1969 while working at the Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California.

Viktor Mikhailovich Kozin is a Russian naval engineer, ship designer and inventor of a new method of icebreaking, called the resonance method of ice destruction. He received his assistant professorship in technical sciences (PhD) for his work Mechanics of deformable solids in Vladivostok in 1994. He became a full professor in 1996 and was awarded the title Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation in 2000. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS).

Stanford University v. Roche Molecular Systems, Inc., 563 U.S. 776 (2011), was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held that title in a patented invention vests first in the inventor, even if the inventor is a researcher at a federally funded lab subject to the 1980 Bayh–Dole Act. The judges affirmed the common understanding of U.S. constitutional law that inventors originally own inventions they make, and contractual obligations to assign those rights to third parties are secondary.

Miriam Elizabeth Benjamin was an American schoolteacher and inventor. In 1888, she obtained a patent for the Gong and Signal Chair for Hotels, becoming the second African-American woman to receive a patent.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. v. Limelight Networks, Inc., 797 F.3d 1020, is a 2015 en banc decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, on remand from a 2014 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court reversing a previous Federal Circuit decision in the case. This is the most recent in a string of decisions in the case that concern the proper legal standard for determining patent infringement liability when multiple actors are involved in carrying out the claimed infringement of a method patent and no single accused infringer has performed all of the steps. In the 2015 remand decision, the Federal Circuit expanded the scope of vicarious liability in such cases, holding that one actor could be held liable for the acts of another actor "when an alleged infringer conditions participation in an activity or receipt of a benefit upon performance of a step or steps of a patented method and establishes the manner or timing of that performance." In addition, the court held that where multiple "actors form a joint enterprise, all can be charged with the acts of the other[s], rendering each liable for the steps performed by the other[s] as if each is a single actor."

From Dreams To Reality: A Tribute to Minority Inventors is a 1986 documentary featuring African-American actor, writer and director Ossie Davis. It features several notable African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos who have made significant contributions to science, technology, and medicine. With a 27-minute runtime, the documentary film was executive produced by Robert B. Amdur and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to encourage more Americans to prepare for and consider careers in science and technology.
