A Missa bifaciata ( Latin for 'twice-performed Mass') or Missa trifaciata ( Latin for 'thrice-performed Mass') was a type of Mass wherein the priest would pray the texts of the Mass of the Catechumens multiple times. [1]
This practice was common in the late Middle Ages when it was used on days with multiple liturgical feasts, such as when the feast day of a saint coincided with a Sunday, and the celebration of a second Mass by a priest was not possible due to restrictions against bination. [2] It also allowed the fulfillment of several Mass intentions on one day. [1] In a Missa bifaciata, the texts of two Masses (or three, in the case of a Missa trifaciata) from the beginning up to Offertory [3] or the Preface would be prayed. This would then be joined to the Canon of the Mass. [1]
According to Richard Hart, this allowed a priest to receive multiple stipends. [3] This form of Mass was considered an abuse, [1] and was forbidden by mediaeval councils. [4] [5]

The Roman Canon is the oldest eucharistic prayer used in the Mass of the Roman Rite, and dates its arrangement to at least the 7th century; its core, however, is much older. Through the centuries, the Roman Canon has undergone minor alterations and modifications, but retains the same essential form it took in the seventh century under Pope Gregory I. The Missa sicca was a form of Catholic devotion used in the medieval Catholic Church when a full Mass could not be said, such as for funerals or marriages in the afternoon after a priest had already said Mass earlier that morning. A Catholic funeral is carried out in accordance with the prescribed rites of the Catholic Church. Such funerals are referred to in Catholic canon law as "ecclesiastical funerals" and are dealt with in canons 1176–1185 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law, and in canons 874–879 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. In Catholic funerals, the Church "seeks spiritual support for the deceased, honors their bodies, and at the same time brings the solace of hope to the living." Orate fratres is the incipit of a request for prayer that the priest celebrating Mass of the Roman Rite addresses to the faithful participating in it before saying the Prayer over the Offerings, formerly called the Secret. It thus corresponds to the Oremus said before the Collect and the Postcommunion, and is an expansion of those shorter exhortations. It has gone through several alterations since the Middle Ages.
