Mitali Madhumita is the second woman officer in the Indian Army to receive a gallantry award. [1] The first woman officer to be awarded Sena Medal for gallantry is Capt (Dr) CR Leena in 1995.
Colonel Mitali Madhumita received the Sena Medal in 2011 [1] for exemplary courage shown during the attack on the Indian embassy by terrorists in Kabul, Afghanistan on 26 February 2010,when she was a Major [2] and operations in Jammu-Kashmir [1] and the northeast states of India. [2] Colonel Madhumita [3] went into the Indian embassy which had come under attack and rescued several injured civilians and army personnel from the debris. About nineteen people died in the 2010 Kabul embassy attack including seven Indians. [4]
Madhumita joined the army in the year 2000 on a short service commission. [5] She was part of the Army Education Corps and served in Kabul, Afghanistan as a part of the army's English Language Training program. Madhumita was also posted in sensitive areas like Jammu-Kashmir and the northeast of the Indian state. [6] Madhumita being a short service commission officer requested the army for a permanent commission but the Ministry of Defence refused to accept her request, Madhumita appealed the Ministry of Defence's decision not to give her permanent commission before the Armed Forces Tribunal in March 2014. [7] The Tribunal found her request had merit and in February 2015 directed the Ministry of Defence to reinstate her. [7] However the Ministry of Defence appealed against the order of the Armed Forces Tribunal in the Supreme court of India stating that Madhumita had enlisted in the army on a short service commission. [7] In 2016 Supreme court of India rejected the Ministry of Defence's plea against granting her a permanent commission in the Indian army. [8] She is currently been appointed as the principal of Sainik School, Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is a statutory body under the ownership of Ministry of Defence, Government of India. BRO develops and maintains road networks in India's border areas and friendly neighboring countries. This includes infrastructure operations in 19 states and three union territories and neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka. By 2022, BRO had constructed over 55,000 kilometres (34,000 mi) of roads, over 450 permanent bridges with a total length of over 44,000 metres (27 mi) length and 19 airfields in strategic locations. BRO is also tasked with maintaining this infrastructure including operations such as snow clearance.
Jasrotia is a Dogra Rajput warrior clan from the Jammu region of India, of Suryavanshi lineage, following Hinduism.
The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. The regimental center is in Srinagar's Airport Complex at Awantipora with a winter setup near Jammu. Its regimental insignia consists of a pair of crossed rifles. The regiment mostly consists of volunteers from the state of Jammu & Kashmir and ethnic groups from the state. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry is considered to be one of the most decorated regiment of the Indian army having won 1 Param Veer Chakra and 3 Ashok Chakra. Naib Subedar Chuni Lal of the 8th battalion Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry is one of the most decorated personnel of the Indian Army.
General Deepak Kapoor PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC served as the 22nd Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army, appointed on 30 September 2007 and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee appointed on 31 August 2009.
Brigadier Ravi Datt Mehta was a brigadier in the Indian army. He died in the suicide bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul while serving as India's Defence Attaché to Afghanistan on 7 July 2008.
Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, AC was an Officer in the Army Medical Corps of the Indian Army, who died fighting a suicide bomber during the attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul. Major Singh was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award in the Indian Armed Forces on 26 January, 2011.
Major Mohit Sharma was an Indian Army Officer who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peace-time military decoration. Maj Sharma was from the elite 1st Para SF.
Captain Arun Singh Jasrotia, AC, SM was an Indian military officer in the 9 Para. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peace time military decoration in India. He was also recipient of Sena Medal.
Air Marshal Jasbir Walia PVSM, VM, VSM, ADC was the commander-in-chief of Strategic Forces Command of the Indian Armed Forces from 1 August 2016 to 31 March 2019. Commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 1979, Walia has held several important appointments as a commanding officer, at Air Headquarters, at the headquarters of various commands of the Indian Air Force (IAF), as an attaché, and has also served as an instructor and as a deputy commandant of various training academies.
Justice Gita Mittal was an Indian judge, now retired. She is the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the first woman judge to serve in that capacity. She has also served as the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court while she was serving as a Judge of the Delhi High Court.
Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC is a retired officer of Indian Army. He served as General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Central Command from 1 October 2018 following the retirement of Lieutenant General Balwant Singh Negi, to 30 September 2019. He was succeeded by Lieutenant General Iqroop Singh Ghuman. Prior to that, he commanded the Eastern Command and South Western Command of the Indian Army
Lieutenant General Balwant Singh Negi, PVSM, UYSM, YSM, SM, VSM & Bar is a former General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Central Command of the Indian Army who served in office from 1 December 2015 till 30 September 2018. He assumed the post after Lt General Rajan Bakshi retired and was succeeded by Lt General Abhay Krishna.
General Manoj Mukund Naravane is a retired Indian Army General who served as the 28th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), as well as the temporary Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee from 15 December 2021 until his superannuation on 30 April 2022. He took over as COAS from General Bipin Rawat on 31 December 2019 after the latter completed his term. Prior to his appointment as the COAS, the general served as the 40th Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Eastern Command and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Army Training Command.
All branches of the Indian Armed Forces have women in combat roles. Women are allowed in combat services and supervisory roles. The Indian Air Force had 13.09% (2018) and 8.50% (2014) women; the Indian Navy 6% (2018) and 3% (2014); the Indian Army 3.80% (2018) and 3% (2014). As of 2020, three officers have the rank of lieutenant-general or equivalent, all in the Medical Services. In May 2021, 83 women were inducted as Jawans for the first time in the Indian Army, in the Corps of Military Police.
Lieutenant General Rajendra Ramrao Nimbhorkar, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM**, VSM is a former officer of the Indian Army who served as the Master General Ordnance (MGO). He assumed office on 9 August 2017 after Lieutenant General Ravi Thodge retired. He was part of one of the strike corp which was responsible for carrying out three strikes inside POK in Surgical Strikes held in 2016 by the Indian Army to clean out all the Pakistani Terrorists Camps. As surgical strikes were carried out very secretly to maintain surprise, so very few people knew of them, one of those involved was Lt. Gen. Nimbhorkar.
Lieutenant General Vinod G. Khandare, PVSM, AVSM, SM is a former officer of the Indian Army and is currently serving as the Principal Adviser in the Ministry of Defence. He retired from active military service on 31 January 2018 and was the Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat of India at the Secretary level from 2018 to 2021. In his final active military appointment, he served as both the Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency and the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff for Intelligence from November 2015 to January 2018.
Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, SM & two bars was an Indian Army officer. He was the commanding officer of the 21st battalion, Rashtriya Rifles. On 2 May 2020, he was killed in action in an encounter in Handwara in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. He was awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry three times, the first bar to the Sena Medal being awarded a few months before his death and the second bar posthumously.
Major General Samir Kumar Chakravorty, AVSM, SC, SM & bar is a former General Officer of the Indian Army. He last served as the General officer commanding 28 Infantry Division. During the Kargil War in 1999, he commanded 18 Garhwal Rifles which received the Chief of the Army Staff’s unit citation and the Battle Honour Drass and the Theatre Honour Kargil for feats of gallant action.
Subedar Sukhdev Singh, SM was a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army. He served in the 16 Grenadiers battalion. On 5th October 2021, he was killed in action during a cross-border firing at Nowshera Sector in Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir. He was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal. During his service, he also took part in the 1999 Kargil War.
Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani AVSM, SM, VSM is a serving general officer of the Indian Army. He currently serves as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Central Command. He earlier served as the Chief of Staff of the Northern Command.
