After his residency, Katz remained in San Francisco. In 1991, he joined the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), serving as chief of research and director of the AIDS Office, director of the Emergency Medical Services Agency and director of the department's health and safety branch. From 1997 to 2010, Katz served as the director of health and health officer for the San Francisco Department of Public Health, where he implemented the Healthy San Francisco program, which is the United States' first municipal universal health care system. [5] [6]
During his tenure, Katz also served as a medicine, epidemiology and biostatistics professor at the University of California, San Francisco, while operating an outpatient practice at San Francisco General Hospital's Positive Healthcare Practice. [7]
In 2010, Katz was recruited by the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Officer William T Fujioka to lead the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. [8]
In 2012, Katz was awarded the National Center for Healthcare Leadership's Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award for his contributions to the health care field. [9]
On November 24, 2015, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors appointed Katz as the director of the Los Angeles County Health Agency. [10] [11]

The Adult Industry Medical Associates P.C., also known simply as AIM or AIM Medical, was a non-profit organization devoted to STD testing of pornographic actors for HIV and other STDs on a scheduled basis. Founded in 1998 by former pornographic film actress, Sharon Mitchell, AIM went out of business in 2011 after licensing issues, and a data breach and lawsuit regarding the violation of patient privacy.

Measure B, also known as the County of Los Angeles Safer Sex In the Adult Film Industry Act, is the law that requires the use of condoms in all vaginal and anal sex scenes in pornography productions filmed in Los Angeles County, California. The measure also requires porn production companies to obtain a health permit prior to production and to post the permit and a notice to performers regarding condom use during production. All individuals involved will also be required to pay $1,600 every 2 years.

Healthy Way LA (HWLA) was a free public health care program available to underinsured or uninsured, low-income residents of Los Angeles County. The program, administered by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, was a Low Income Health Program (LIHP) approved under the 1115 Waiver. HWLA helped to narrow the large gap in access to health care among low-income populations by extending health care insurance to uninsured LA County residents living at 0 percent to 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Individuals eligible for HWLA were assigned to a medical home within the LA County Department of Health Services (LADHS) or its partners, thus gaining access to continuous primary care, preventive and specialty services, mental health services, and other support systems. HWLA was one of the few sources of coordinated health care for disadvantaged adults without dependents in LA County. HWLA was succeeded by My Health LA, a no-cost health care program for low-income Los Angeles County residents launched on October 1, 2014.
Lester Breslow was an American physician who promoted public health. Breslow's career had a significant impact. He is credited with pioneering chronic disease prevention and health behavior intervention. His work with the Human Population Laboratory in the Alameda County Study established the connection between mortality and lifestyle issues like exercise, diet, sleep, smoking, and alcohol. He has been called "Mr. Public Health".
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, also known as MLK-LA, is a 131-bed public community hospital in the Willowbrook neighborhood of southern Los Angeles County, California. It was planned and designed to especially serve the surrounding South Los Angeles communities' needs, including those of underinsured or uninsured patients.

The Los Angeles County Health Agency is Los Angeles County's consolidated health agency, comprising the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the United States' second largest municipal hospital system, Mental Health, the United States' largest municipal mental health system, and Public Health. The Health Agency was established to coordinate and streamline the county's physical health, public health, and behavioral health care services, programs, and policies under a single integrated system of care. Smith, is an American translational research virologist, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at the University of California San Diego, co-director of the San Diego Center for AIDS Research, and vice chair of research in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego. His research interests include transmission, prevention, and treatment of both HIV and SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19). Since joining the UC San Diego faculty in 2003, Smith has been awarded more than $37 million in federal funding as a principal investigator. His research interests include transmission, prevention, and treatment of both HIV and COVID-19.
