Moacir Santos (26 July 1926 – 6 August 2006) [1] was a Brazilian composer, multi-instrumentalist and music educator. Musicians such as Baden Powell, Bola Sete and Wilson das Neves studied under him. As a composer, Santos worked with Nara Leão, Roberto Menescal, Sérgio Mendes and Lynda Laurence, among others. [2] [3] His music was highly respected by musicians in Brazil and the United States, despite never achieving wider recognition. [4] [5]
Mark Levine, Anat Cohen, and Muiza Adnet have all released albums consisting entirely of Santos' music.
Moacir Santos was born in Flores do Pajeú, Pernambuco in 1926. His mother died when he was two years old, and as his father had already left the family, he was taken in by another family. [1] He grew up in poverty but his adoptive family assisted him with attending school and music lessons. [1] [4] By age 14, he could play the saxophone, banjo, guitar and mandolin. [1] As a teenager, he played in the band of the Military Police of Paraíba and later became the band's conductor. [6] He eventually ran away from home, becoming an itinerant musician moving around Pernambuco looking for employment and even, for a time, working in a travelling circus. [7] [1] [4]
By the 1950s, Santos was living in Rio de Janeiro and worked for Rádio Nacional as a composer. [4] [7] Recognising the artistic value of popular music, Santos began to study big-band composers, taking lessons from Hans-Joachim Koelreutter. [7] Ultimately, he would become the radio station's music director. During the 1950s and 1960s, Santos privately taught a number of young Bossa Nova musicians such as Nara Leão, Baden Powell, Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal. [1]
In 1965, Santos released the album Coisas (translating to "things" in Portuguese) on the Forma record label. [4] The album was a fusion of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the sounds of big-band jazz. Although at the time the album did not garner much attention, it has gone on to receive praise with the New York Times describing it as "one of the great accomplishments of modern Brazilian music". [1] Larry Blumenfeld, in The Village Voice , wrote that the album represented "the best of Brazilian jazz". [4]
After composing a number of scores for Brazilian films throughout the 1960s, Santos had the opportunity to move to the United States. [6] In 1967, Santos and his wife, Cleonice, moved to Pasadena, California, with the intent of breaking into the film industry. [4] [6] [1] He continued to give music lessons from his home, through which he met Horace Silver. [6] Most of his work in Hollywood was uncredited, with Final Justice being his only film credit. [1]
Santos recorded three albums for Blue Note in the 1970s. His 1972 release, Maestro , was nominated for a Grammy award. [1] Santos, however, did not receive the wider acclaim he sought and continued to write and teach music in Southern California. [4]
In 2001, fellow Brazilians Zé Nogueira and Mario Adnet arranged sessions to re-record some of Santos' compositions. [1] These recordings would form the 2004 album Ouro Negro which featured performances from Milton Nascimento, Joao Donato and Gilberto Gil. [5] [1] The album revived Santos' reputation in Brazil and around the world. [1] His final album, Choros & Alegria, was released in 2005. It was made up entirely of new material and featured a performance from Wynton Marsalis. [5]
In 2006, Santos died due to complications from an earlier stroke at an assisted living facility in Pasadena, California. [4] Shortly before dying, Santos was awarded the Shell Music and Premio Tim awards. [8]
Bossa nova is a relaxed style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a calm syncopated rhythm with chords and fingerstyle mimicking the beat of a samba groove, as if it was a simplification and stylization on the guitar of the rhythm produced by a samba school band. Another defining characteristic of the style is the use of unconventional chords in some cases with complex progressions and "ambiguous" harmonies. A common misconception is that these complex chords and harmonies were derived from jazz, but samba guitar players have been using similar arrangement structures since the early 1920s, indicating a case of parallel evolution of styles rather than a simple transference from jazz to bossa nova. Nevertheless, bossa nova was influenced by jazz, both in the harmonies used and also by the instrumentation of songs, and today many bossa nova songs are considered jazz standards. The popularity of bossa nova has helped to renew samba and contributed to the modernization of Brazilian music in general.
Carlos Eduardo Lyra Barbosa was a Brazilian singer, and composer of numerous bossa nova and Música popular brasileira classics. He has also worked as a writer, with notable contributions to musical films such as Para Viver um Grande Amor and Intimidade. He and Antônio Carlos Jobim were the first two music composers, together with lyricists Vinicius de Moraes and Ronaldo Boscoli, to be recorded by João Gilberto on his first LP entitled Chega de Saudade (1959), which was called the first generation of Bossa Nova.
Baden Powell de Aquino, known professionally as Baden Powell, was a Brazilian guitarist. He combined classical techniques with popular harmony and swing. He performed in many styles, including bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, Latin jazz and MPB. He performed on stage during most of his lifetime. Powell composed many pieces for guitar some of them now considered guitar standards, such as Abração em Madrid, Braziliense, Canto de Ossanha, Casa Velha, Consolação, Horizon, Imagem, Lotus, Samba, Samba Triste, Simplesmente, Tristeza e Solidão, and Samba da Benção. He released Os Afro-sambas, a watershed album in MPB, with Vinicius de Moraes in 1966. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Brazilian guitar players of all time.
Brazilian jazz can refer to both a genre, largely influenced by bossa nova and samba, that exists in many nations and the jazz music of Brazil itself.
Rafael Baptista Rabello was a virtuoso Brazilian guitarist and composer. During the 1980s and 1990s, he was considered one of the best acoustic guitar players in the world and played with many famous artists, such as Tom Jobim, Ney Matogrosso, Paulo Moura, and Paco de Lucia.
Love, Strings and Jobim is a 1966 album by various Brazilian artists who play new Brazilian songs by various composers. Because Antônio Carlos Jobim is pictured on the cover and mentioned in the title, he has been and continues to be credited to be the performing artist on the album. Jobim does not appear on the album except as a composer of two of the twelve songs. The original Brazilian title of this album is "Tom Jobim Apresenta" and it appeared on the Elenco label.

Roberto Menescal is a Brazilian composer, record producer, guitarist, vocalist, and pioneer of bossa nova. In many of his songs there are references to the sea, including his best-known composition "O Barquinho". He is also known for work with Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Wanda Sá, Ale Vanzella, and many others. Menescal has performed in Latin music genres such as Música popular brasileira, bossa nova, and samba. He was nominated for a Latin Grammy for his work with his son's bossa group Bossacucanova in 2002 and received the 2013 Latin Recording Academy Special Awards in Las Vegas in November 2013.
João Donato de Oliveira Neto was a Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist as well as a trombonist from Rio Branco. He first worked with Altamiro Carrilho and went on to perform with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto. Because of the area he grew up in Brasil he was able to hear Cuban music on the radio. This influence would manifest itself in many of his compositions, piano, and trombone playing. Donato's most well-known compositions include: "Amazonas", "Lugar Comum", "Simples Carinho", "Até Quem Sabe" and "Nasci Para Bailar".

Wilson das Neves was a Brazilian percussionist and singer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was a key figure in the history of Brazilian music, having played with many of Brazil's greatest musicians across many decades and featured on numerous important recordings. Wilson was a very important artist specially for Brazilian popular music as a sambista, composer, and instrumentalist, with over 50 years dedicated to music. He can be heard in over 600 records from major Brazilian artists.
