Comoros took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. It was Comoros's fourth appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. Among other achievements, Mostafa Mansour was the nation's first competitor in sprint canoeing while fencer Shaimaa El-Gammal became the first Egyptian female to appear in four editions of the Olympics.
Sohrab Moradi is a current world record holding retired Iranian weightlifter who won the gold medal in the 94 kg weight division at the 2016 Olympics. He currently holds the world record with a total of 417kg in the 94kg weight class. He formerly held world records in the snatch and clean and jerk categories. He was the Asian champion in the 85 kg weight class in 2009 and 2012.
Mohamed Issa Al-Thawadi is a Qatari sprint hurdler. Al-Thawadi represented Qatar at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed for the men's 110 metres hurdles. He ran in the sixth heat against seven other athletes including defending Olympic champion Liu Xiang of China. While his strongest opponent did not complete the hurdle lap because of a serious injury, Al-Thawadi gladly finished in fifth place with his seasonal best time of 13.64 seconds. Although he ranked below the four mandatory slots, Al-Thawadi qualified for the next phase of the competition based on his time and performance in the heats. For the second round, Al-Thawadi, however, was disqualified from the competition, for being responsible to the second false start of the third heat.
