Monday Okpebholo (born 29 August 1970), is a Nigerian businessman and politician who has served as Governor of Edo State since 12 November 2024. He was the senator representing Edo Central senatorial district from 2023 to 2024.

Early life and education

Okpebholo was born on 29 August 1970 in Udomi-Uwessan community of Irrua. Okpebholo attended Udomi Community Primary School and Ujabhole Community Secondary School, both in Uwesan Irrua, Esan Central LGA. He completed his secondary education and obtained his senior school certificate in Jos, Plateau State. Afterwards, he obtained a degree in Business Administration from the University of Abuja and holds Masters' degree in Policy and Leadership Studies from the same institution. [1]

Career

Politics

Okpebholo contested for the Senate Seat in Edo Central senatorial district, under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was elected on 25 February 2023. On 13 June 2023, he was inaugurated into the 10th National Assembly of Nigeria, as the senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Edo Central senatorial district.

In 2024, Okpebholo was summoned by Magistrates' Court over allegations of falsifying his date of birth, stated as 1 August 1977, on his voter's card. [9] [10] [11] [12] Previously, he was caught falsifying his date of birth as 29 August 1972 on his West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate as a student. [9] [10] [11] [12]

During the 2024 campaign, Okpebholo was endorsed by Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, who was quoted saying "Are you not tired? No light, water, healthcare, security and good roads. If you will vote for senator Monday, raise your hand." [13]

Okpebholo was declared the winner of the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is the Serving Governor of Edo State. [14]

Personal life

Okpebholo has had two previous marriages but he is currently unmarried. He however has 4 children from his previous marriages. [15] Besides being a politician and a family man, he is also a committed Christian and an active member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. [15]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections</span>

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

The 2023 Abia State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Abia State, concurrent with elections to the Abia State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP governor Okezie Ikpeazu was term-limited and could not seek a third term. Alex Otti, a banker, gained the office for the Labour Party by a margin of victory over first runner-up and PDP nominee—Okey Ahiwe, the former Chief of Staff to Ikpeazu.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Ekiti State held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Ekiti State. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele representing Ekiti Central, Adetumbi Olubunmi representing Ekiti North and Adebayo Clement Adeyeye representing Ekiti South all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress; however, Adeyeye's win was later overturned, and the seat awarded to PDP incumbent Abiodun Olujimi.
