Monica Inunak Ell-Kanayuk is a Canadian politician and broadcaster who served in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2011 until 2017 and president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada from 2018 until 2022. Prior to her election as an MLA,she was a director of programming at the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation,president of the Baffin Chamber of Commerce,and owner-and-operator of sewing company Arctic Creations.
Based in the Iqaluit West area since the 1970s,she had a career in broadcasting,including as the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation's director of programming and an eighteen-year tenure at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. [1] [2] She served as president of the Baffin Chamber of Commerce and the Nunavut Economic Forum and as director of economic development at Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated,as well as vice-president of the Nunavut Chamber of Commerce, [3] [4] She also held vice-president roles in Atuqtuarvik Corp and Pauktuutit. [4] Known to have "had a lifelong passion for clothing design and sewing", [5] she was also owner-and-operator of a sewing company named Arctic Creations, [4] which won the Baffin Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Year award in 1996. In April 2011,Paul Okalik resigned from the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in order to run in the 2011 Canadian federal election as the Liberal Party of Canada's candidate for Nunavut,triggering the 2011 Iqaluit West territorial by-election. [1] Ell-Kanayuk subsequently ran as a candidate and used door-to-door campaigning during her run,recalling that she "tried to get into every house but of course there’s dogs and stuff". [6] On September 12,2011,she won the most votes of any candidate - 230 (or 54%) - and was therefore elected to represent the district. [1]
She was elected to the Iqaluit-Manirajak district in the 2013 Nunavut general election,winning 69% of the votes. [7] During her tenure,she served in the Executive Council of Nunavut in positions such as deputy premier of Nunavut,Minister of Economic Development and Transportation,Minister of Energy,Minister of Family Services,Minister of Health,Minister responsible for Homelessness,Minister responsible for Mines,Minister responsible for the Qulliq Energy Corporation,and Minister responsible for the Status of Women. [5] [7] In the 2017 Nunavut general election,she lost her district to provincial finance officer Adam Lightstone. [8]
In 2018,she was elected president of Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada,beating out Northwest Territories MLA Herbert Nakimayak for the position. [9] She served until 2022,when she was succeeded by Lisa Qiluqqi Koperqualuk. [10]
She has six children with her husband,hunter Eeneasie Kanayuk. [3]

The Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) is a television production company based in Nunavut with programming targeted at the Inuit population of Nunavut. Almost all of its programs are broadcast in Inuktitut. Some are also in English. IBC shows centre on Inuit culture. The company has five production centers in Nunavut,all staffed by Inuit. Founded in the early 1980s,the IBC was the first indigenous-language television network in North America.
The 2008 Nunavut General Election was held on October 27,2008,to return members to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The election was contested across 15 of Nunavut's 19 electoral districts under the first past the post system of voting. Due to local circumstances,the election was delayed in two districts,and two districts did not hold elections as their incumbent MLAs faced no opposition and were acclaimed back into office.

Eva Qamaniq Aariaka is a Canadian Inuk politician,who was elected in the 2008 territorial election to represent the electoral district of Iqaluit East in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. She was subsequently chosen as the second premier of Nunavut,under the territory's consensus government system,on November 14,2008. Aariak was the fifth woman to serve as a premier in Canada.
Hezakiah Oshutapik was a Canadian politician,who was elected to represent the district of Pangnirtung in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in a by-election on September 12,2011.
Pat Angnakak is a Canadian politician,who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2013 election and reelected in 2017. He won the by-election over Niore Iqalukjuak,who had been the second-place candidate behind Samuel Nuqingaq in the 2013 election,and former MLA James Arreak.

The fifth general election held since the creation of the territory in 1999,it was the first election held under Nunavut's new fixed election dates law,which requires elections to be held no more than four years after the prior election.

Kakuktinniq has described her work as a means of preserving Inuit traditional skills of sewing and clothing production,which has historically been a significant aspect of Inuit culture. In particular,she advocates for handmade fur garments as sustainable fashion.
