Accreditation
Montessori High School at University Circle was a member of the Cleveland Council of Independent Schools, was chartered by the State of Ohio, and was recognized as an official World School by International Baccalaureate.
Diploma options
In addition to earning the MHS diploma, student could earn International Baccalaureate certificates and diploma in selected International Baccalaureate courses.
Students could sit for exams to earn certificates in any of the six subjects: [4] English, Math, Science, 20th-Century World History, Art, or World Language. Students who achieved a qualifying score would earn a certificate in that subject. IB certificates mark the successful culmination of an area of study for students, and are an achievement in themselves.
Lillard Hall
Now the Science and Mathematics building, Lillard Hall was originally the private residence of Dr. Gordon Morrill. [5]
The Federalist style building was designed in 1910 by renowned architect Charles F. Schweinfurth, who designed homes on Cleveland’s Millionaire's Row, the Old Stone Church, Trinity Cathedral, the Union Club, Cuyahoga County Courthouse, and the stone bridges along Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. [6] It is the only private residence Schweinfurth built, and is known as one of the most beautiful mansions in University Circle.
The building was converted to house classrooms, offices, music rooms, and libraries shortly after it was acquired by MHS in 2007. Lillard Hall is located at 11025 Magnolia Drive, Cleveland.
The Science Lab
The two-car garage that sits behind Lillard Hall was also converted, and functioned as the school's self-sustaining science laboratory and greenhouse. The lab not only supported science classes at MHS, but it also supports the MHS Garden Squad, which maintains the school garden.
Ferris House
The humanities and foreign language building, Ferris House, was originally built in 1937. [5] Ferris House was acquired by MHS in 2009, and renovations were completed the following winter. The building houses classrooms, a full-service kitchen and lunchroom, and a multi-media art studio. The house's original garage was converted into a theatre classroom.
MHS also added a hoop-style greenhouse and a picnic area in the backyard.
The Otis Boarding House
Completed in 1918, Otis House was a single-family residence and remained so until the 1980s, when it was converted into condominiums. Otis House went on to serve as the MHS residential house for boarding students. MHS residential guides also lived in the house, and helped students learn independent living skills. It is located at 10923 Magnolia Drive, Cleveland.
The Carriage House
Converted at the same time as the main house, the Carriage House originally served as stables for the Otis family. It is located behind Otis House.
The Friends' House
MHS partnered with the Cleveland Friends Meeting and Montessori Development Partnerships [7] to have access to additional space in the Friends' House in 2015. The house is owned by the Cleveland Friends Meeting, and used weekly as a worship space for the Quakers. Though MHS is not affiliated with the Quakers, the space had been used to house community meeting, student art galleries, and offices.
History
Montessori High School at University Circle was founded by a group of Montessori educators and supporters. These individuals worked in concert with a national movement to expand Montessori education at the middle and high school level.
After more than a year of planning and development, MHS opened its doors to 37 students, including 17 boarding students, in August 2008. At that time, the campus consisted of two houses, Lillard Hall and Otis House, on the north side of Magnolia Drive. In 2009, MHS was recognized as an International Baccalaureate World School (IB), and has since offered the IB Diploma Programme. In 2009, a third house was added on the south side of Magnolia to accommodate steadily expanding enrollment. The first graduating class consisted of 8 students in 2010. [9] By Fall 2011, 80 students were enrolled at MHS, open to grades 9th through 12th. [3]
MHS went on to maintain approximately 100 students, 20 percent of whom lived on campus. In May 2017, MHS reported that ownership of Lillard Hall, Ferris House, and the Otis Boarding House would be transferred to the school. The following year, on May 4, 2018, Montessori High School announced in an email to parents that they would be ceasing operations at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. The reason for closure was that the school had been operating at a significant deficit, and that the board had realized the school could not continue operation with accumulating deficits. Tuition deposits and prepaid tuition for the 2018-2019 school year were refunded, and students, faculty, and staff were forced to find new schools and employment for the following school year. The final school day was June 1, 2018, and the school officially shut down on June 30.
Tempe Union proposed opening a Montessori High School by 2013. According to an article in the Arizona Republic, "[Superintendent Kenneth Baca] is looking at Montessori High School at University Circle in Cleveland as a model for ideas, and he hopes to take district staff, a school-board member and interested community members to visit the school in the fall." [10] Other Montessori schools throughout the country have used MHS as a model.
International High School of San Francisco is a private high school in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, California. Graduates earn either the International Baccalaureate ("IB") or the French Baccalaureate. The IB curriculum is primarily taught in English, while the French Bac is primarily taught in French. A common misconception is that French is required to attend IHS. This is not true. Non-French speakers follow the IB curriculum. Approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the students graduate with the IB diploma.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme primarily aimed at 16-to-19-year-olds in 140 countries around the world. The programme provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognized by many universities worldwide. It was developed in the early-to-mid-1960s in Geneva, Switzerland, by a group of international educators. After a six-year pilot programme that ended in 1975, a bilingual diploma was established.
Andrew Putnam Hill High School is a public secondary school, magnet, International Baccalaureate World School, and located in the Edenvale neighbourhood of San Jose, California, United States. The school opened in 1956, and educates approximately 2,173 students in grades 9–12. It is one of eighteen schools of the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD). It is named after Californian painter and preservationist Andrew P. Hill.
The Academia Británica Cuscatleca (ABC) is an established and highly regarded international bilingual school in El Salvador. It is a community of some 1300 students and is fully accredited by Council of International Schools (CIS), the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the Values-Based Trust for Education (VBFT).
St Clare's is a coeducational independent, international day and boarding college in North Oxford, England offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a Preparatory IB programme, English language courses, University Pathways, Gap Year study and IB teacher training workshops.
Leysin American School, founded in 1960 by Fred and Sigrid Ott, is a co-educational independent boarding school focusing on university preparation for grades 7–12. Approximately 340 students attend the school and English is the language of instruction. LAS is located in the alpine resort village of Leysin, Vaud, Switzerland, two hours east of Geneva. The international school is home to students from sixty countries. Approximately 12% of students are American. Students pursue either the American high school diploma or the International Baccalaureate, with additional options of individual IB classes to suit particular interests. LAS also offers an extensive summer school, a pre-high school program for grade 7, and an ESL program. In October 2010, the school celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and officially inaugurated the opening of the newly renovated Grand Hotel, which was originally built in 1892 and houses IB students. LAS facilities include various classroom layouts, a media center, libraries, blackbox theater, performance hall, computer lab, a new art center, and access to horseback riding, ice skating, tennis, hockey, and swimming. The faculty to student ratio at LAS is 1:8 and the average class size is 12. LAS employs 72 full-time faculty, of which almost all live on campus; 95% are native English speakers, and 70% hold advanced degrees.
Jerudong International School is a co-educational, boarding and day school in Brunei, Southeast Asia. It has over 1680 students - of which around 200 are boarding students. Less than 50% of its student body are Bruneians, with the remainder fulfilled by students from 55 countries. Jerudong International School first opened its doors for primary education in January 1997 and subsequently for secondary in October of the same year. JIS offers a British International education.
Riverstone International School is a private, independent school for preschool through high school students in Boise, Idaho that offers day and boarding programs. Riverstone was the first International Baccalaureate World School in Idaho and is one of a small number of schools in the United States to offer all three IB programs, the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). The school’s Five Pillars—Academic Excellence, Community and Service, Leadership by Example, International Understanding and Outdoor Education—provide pathways for students to explore academically and personally. Students raft the Main Payette River and Main Salmon River and backpack through the White Cloud and Sawtooth Mountains. The school's boarding program enrolls a maximum of 30 students from the U.S. and around the world. The school community as a whole includes representation from 45+ countries, including Australia, Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and Vietnam. Riverstone is a Malone Family Foundation supported school.
Westbourne School is a coeducational independent day and boarding school, nursery and prep school for children between the ages of 2 and 18 located in the commuter town of Penarth, in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales 5.2 miles south west from the Welsh capital city of Cardiff.
Bonn International School (BIS) is a private international school based in Bonn, Germany. It is a non-profit organization, and is managed by a board of trustees. Members of the board include BIS faculty, as well as parents of students studying at BIS. BIS currently has 800 students, ages ranging from 3 to 18 years and coming from 80 different countries. Countries include Germany, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, China, India, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Australia.
The Taipei European School is a European international school in the Shilin District of Taipei, Taiwan. It includes a British section, a German section, and a French section.
Whitby School is an independent, co-educational private school in Greenwich, Connecticut, that was founded in 1958 and is accredited by the American Montessori Society, the International Baccalaureate Organization and the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools. The Head of School is Dr. John "Jack" Creeden, who joined Whitby in July 2019.
St. George's International School, Switzerland is a private, co-educational international school for boarding and day students aged 18 months to 18 years old. Its main campus is located in Montreux, Vaud, at the foot of the Alps and on the shores of Lake Léman, approximately halfway between Vevey and the center of the city of Montreux.
Qingdao Amerasia International School (QAIS) is a private, non-profit international school located in Qingdao, China, offering Montessori education from ages 1.5-5 and an inquiry-based curriculum up to age 18. QAIS has over 200 enrolled students representing 25 countries. Qingdao Amerasia International School is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the full IB Continuum: the IB Primary Years Programme, IB Middle Years Programme, and IB Diploma Programme. Its Montessori Toddler and Montessori Early Childhood Programs are the only programs in Asia to be accredited by the American Montessori Society.

Mulgrave School is an independent non-denominational, co-educational, university-preparatory school in West Vancouver, Canada. It has approximately 80 students in every grade and uses all IB programs. The school is located on the side of the Cypress Group mountain range and off Exit 8 of Highway 1.
Nexus International School Malaysia established in 2008, Nexus International School is a private international school, with boarding facilities that is based in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It is part of the Taylor's Education Group. The education levels consists of Early Years, Primary, Secondary, and Pre-university.
Alcuin School is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school in Dallas, Texas. With Montessori and International Baccalaureate programs, it serves students from 18-months-old through the 12th grade. Alcuin is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest, recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale, and is an IB World School.
Haut-Lac International Bilingual School is a coeducational international school for ages 3 to 18 years located in Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It was founded in 1993 and originally located in Vevey. About forty-five different nationalities are represented in the student body and the school promotes intercultural awareness and sensitivity. Haut-Lac provides academic instruction in English and French and students are encouraged to become bilingual, benefiting from a selection of courses in both languages.
Students wear uniform and are grouped vertically in four Houses for sporting and other competitions.
