The Monument to Nizami Ganjavi in Saint Petersburg is located in a square situated between houses 25 and 27 on Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt. [1]
The sculpture had been founded in Baku and then presented to Saint Petersburg as a gift from Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the city's origination. [2]
The sculpture was created by Gerush Babayev, an Azerbaijani sculptor, alumni of the Saint Petersburg Art and Industry Academy. Felix Romanovskiy, Honoured artist of the Russian Federation is the author of a pedestal's project. The pedestal was made in “Kombinat-skulptura” enterprise of Petersburg. Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia and Heydar Aliyev, the then president of Azerbaijan also participated in the opening ceremony of the monument.
In his speech made at the opening ceremony Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “A very happy and solemn event is taking place now – we are unveiling a monument to the prominent son of East, to the prominent son of Azerbaijan – poet and thinker Nizami. [3] [4] The head of the Iranian Philology Department and the dean of the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University I. M. Steblin-Kamensky, speaking of this monument characterises the description of Nizami as an Azerbaijani poet as a fruit of nationalist tendencies and as an “outright falsification”. [5]
The bronze 5 meter sculpture of the poet was made in an oriental style. Nizami Ganjavi is portrayed sitting on a bench under an arch, in the Eastern attire, with a book in hand. Words “Nizami Ganjavi” (Azerbaijani : Nizami Gəncəvi) is written on the pedestal in Azerbaijani.

Campaign on granting Nizami the status of the national poet of Azerbaijan is a politically and ideologically motivated distortion of the historical record of the national-cultural origin of one of the classics of Persian poetry, Nizami Ganjavi, which began in the USSR in the late 1930s and was arranged to coincide with the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the poet. Memorial to the Victims of Political Repression in Saint Petersburg is a monument dedicated to millions of people who suffered from state terror in the USSR. It is located at the descent to the water on the Voskresenskaya Embankment of the Neva River, separating it from the legendary Kresty Prison, where many political prisoners were held. The central element of the monument is a pair of sculptures of "metaphysical sphinxes" by artist Mihail Chemiakin. Executed in the spirit of modernism, they feature - their faces are divided vertically into two halves. Facing the residential buildings on the embankment, the sphinxes have profiles of young female faces, and facing the Kresty prison on the opposite bank are exposed skulls. This symbolizes the tragic division of the people during the Soviet years. Around the perimeter of the sculpture pedestals are plaques with texts dedicated to Soviet repression, written by famous writers and dissidents. Between the sphinxes is a structure made of granite blocks in the form of an early Christian cross with a prison window and a crown of thorns made of barbed wire. The architectural solution of the monument was designed by Vyacheslav Bukhayev and Anatoly Vasiliev. The memorial was opened at the initiative of the sculptor and city authorities on April 28, 1995.
