Mookajjiya Kanasugalu is a 2019 Kannada film directed by P. Sheshadri, based on the Jnanpith Award-winning novel of the same name by K. Shivaram Karanth. [2] The film was produced by Navyachitra Creations and written by P. Sheshadri. [3] [4]
Mookajji is an eighty-year-old woman who lives in coastal Karnataka. Mookambika, as she was named at birth, was married off as a child before she could attain puberty, but the boy she was married to died within two days of the wedding. As a result, Mookajji now lives in her maternal house with her brother's grandson, Subbaraya and his wife Seetha who have two children. Subbaraya discovers that Mookajji has the power of extrasensory perception. She can touch any object or talk to a person and see the history behind that object or person.
One day Subbaraya brings a small wicker basket to Mookajji so that she can store her betel nuts in it. Upon touching it, she sees a vision of the history of that basket. She begins to narrate the story of Ramanna and Nagi.
Ramanna and Naagi
Naagi makes a wicker basket as a sign of affection for her husband Rammana who rejects it. He mistreats Naagi regularly and denies her affectionate advances which saddens her. Naagi is noticed by a rich merchant in the village named Sheenappa who begins to lust after her. He visits her home when Ramanna is absent and propositions her to come to his house. Naagi is reluctant. Refusing to give up, Sheenappa arranges for Ramanna to leave the village for a few days by giving him errands to run in other places. Naagi reluctantly goes to Sheenappa's house where they make love. Naagi and Sheenapa continue their affair. Ramanna notices this one day and leaves her.
Sheenappa and Naagi soon have a child together. But Naagi notices Sheenappa having an affair with another woman and confronts him. He throws her out of the house along with their infant daughter. Naagi is then forced to make wicker baskets for a living to support herself and her child. Ramanna goes to Naagi to take her back but Naagi refuses saying that she is a defiled woman and cannot return to him.
Mookajji finishes narrating the story of Ramanna and Naagi to Subbaraya.
She then talks to Ramanna, who is now forty years old, and tells him that it was not just Naagi's fault for having the affair and that he was equally to blame for not fulfilling her desires which drove her to have the affair in the first place.
A few days later, Seetha sees Naagi and her daughter who are thirsty and invites them to her house to offer them some refreshments. Naagi realises that Mookajji lives there too. When she reaches there, she talks to Mookajji about her plight. Mookajji sends her granddaughter on an errand to deliver a bag to a house and asks Naagi to go as an escort since the house is near a forest. Upon reaching the house, Naagi realises it is Ramanna, her first husband's home. Mookajji's granddaughter goes to the house and gives the bag to Ramanna who opens it and sees that the bag contains the wicker basket Naagi had made for him. He sees Naagi crying in the distance. He runs to her and they hug each other.
Subbaraya continues to bring various artefacts such as old bones and tools he found in a cave. Mookajji tells him the stories behind those objects. They hold discussions about sexuality, nature and other topics.
Thippi
Later, when Subbaraya plans to visit Hindgana, a neighbouring village, Mookajji asks him to visit her childhood friend Thippi and enquire about her. Subbaraya visits Thippi and they have a conversation where Thippi tells him the story of Mookajji.
The film flashes back to the past. Thippi is also widowed when she turns twenty. Mookambika gets angry with the village deity and blames the Goddess for their misfortune. This leads to people labelling Mookambika as crazy and avoiding her. In due course, she comes to terms with her relationship to the Goddess, but when she is at the temple one day, she is rudely told to leave by the temple priest. She leaves with a smile.
The film returns to the present. Thippi tells Subbaraya that Mookajji underwent a drastic change that day and stopped talking, except for occasional rants about people accusing them of wrongdoings which would later turn out to be true. Her silence had earned her the name of "Mookajji" (translation from Kannada: Mooka = Mute; Ajji = Grandmother).
Subbaraya continues to bring her artefacts for her to discern its history.
One day, Mookajji asks Subbaraya to help take her to the neighbouring village where Thippi resides. They travel to Hindgana where Mookajji and Thippi have an emotional reunion.
A few days later, Mookajji asks Subbaraya to escort her to Hindgana to see Thippi right away. Although hesitant at first, Subbaraya agrees to after his wife insists that he make Mookajji as a priority. They go to Hindgana where they see Thippi bedridden. Thippi has not eaten in two days and is about to breathe her last. Mookajji pacifies Thippi and puts her at ease while Thippi passes away. She then asks Subbaraya to arrange for the final rites.
Anant Rao
Mookajji confronts her grandson's friend who has come on a visit to their village. He is a teacher and lives under the pretence of being spiritually inclined, and avoids marriage saying that it will interfere in his life of spiritualism. However, he secretly continues to have a homosexual relationship with a student. When Mookajji questions him about his refusal to be married, he cites his spiritual life as reason for it. Mookajji indicates to him that she is aware of his homosexuality and that he should give up his façade of being into spirituality and accept himself. This shakes him up.
Subbaraya gets a dream one night where he sees Mookajji telling him to throw away a gold chain that he had shown to Mookajji.
Moojajjiya Kanasugalu began its shoot in coastal Karnataka on 10 October 2018, to coincide with 116th birth anniversary of Karanth. [5] [6] [7]
The Jnanpith Award is the oldest and the highest Indian literary award presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". Instituted in 1961, the award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and English, with no posthumous conferral.
Girish Karnad was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer, playwright and a Jnanpith awardee, who predominantly worked in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi films. His rise as a playwright in the 1960s marked the coming of age of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
Kota Shivaram Karanth, also abbreviated as K. Shivaram Karanth, was an Indian polymath, who was a novelist in Kannada language, playwright and an ecological conservationist. Ramachandra Guha called him the "Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India, who has been one of the finest novelists-activists since independence". He was the third writer to be decorated with the Jnanpith Award for Kannada, the highest literary honor conferred in India. His son Ullas is an ecological conservationist.
Babukodi Venkataramana Karanth widely known as B. V. Karanth was an Indian film director, playwright, actor, screenwriter, composer, and dramatist known for his works in the Kannada theatre, Kannada cinema, and Hindi cinema. One of the pioneers of the Parallel Cinema, Karanth was an alumnus of the National School of Drama (1962) and later, its director. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1976), six National Film Awards, and the civilian honor Padma Shri for his contributions towards the field of art.
Gubbi Hampanna Veeranna was an Indian theatre director. He was one of the pioneers and most prolific contributors to Kannada theatre. He established the drama company, Gubbi Sree Channabasaveshwara Nataka Company, which played a crucial role in promoting the Kannada theatre field. He has been conferred the title Nataka Ratna meaning "A Precious Jewel" in the theatre world. Gubbi Veeranna laid the foundation stone for the Kannada film industry. He established a studio, produced silent films in early days of cinema and produced good Kannada short films, He built theaters and introduced many actors including Dr Rajkumar, G.V Iyer, B.V Karanth, Girish Karnad and others to the Kannada film industry.
Chandrashekhara Basavanneppa Kambara is a prominent Indian poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada language and the founder-vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi also president of the Sahitya Akademi, country's premier literary institution, after Vinayak Krishna Gokak (1983) and U.R. Ananthamurthy (1993). He is known for effective adaptation of the North Karnataka dialect of the Kannada language in his plays, and poems, in a similar style as in the works of D.R. Bendre.
Ranganayaki is a 1981 Indian Kannada language film directed by Puttanna Kanagal starring Aarathi, Ambareesh, Ramakrishna, Ashok, Rajanand. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ashwattha.
Umashree is an Indian actress and politician. She appears in Kannada cinema, particularly in character roles and supporting roles. She received the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role as Gulabi in the 2008 Kannada film Gulabi Talkies.
Chomana Dudi is a 1975 Indian Kannada-language drama film directed by B. V. Karanth and starring M. V. Vasudeva Rao and Padma Kumta. It is based on a novel of the same name, written by Shivaram Karanth. The film was released in the year 1975 and won the Swarna Kamal, India's National Award for the best film. This was also the first Kannada movie to feature a reference to the demigod Panjurli.
Atithi is a 2002 Indian Kannada language film directed by P. Sheshadri. The film deals with terrorism and the psychology of the terrorist. The 9/11 US tragedy and a car blast in Bangalore inspired the director Sheshadri to make a film about the psychology of terrorism.
Pattabhiramaiah Sheshadri is an Indian film director who works in Kannada cinema. He is known for his films Munnudi, Atithi, Beru, Tutturi, Vimukthi, Bettada Jeeva, Bharath Stores and December-1. He has also worked as a director in various television serials.
Meghana Sundar Raj Sarja is an Indian actress who primarily works in Malayalam and Kannada films along with a few Telugu and Tamil films. She made her acting debut in the 2009 Telugu film Bendu Apparao R.M.P. She has won Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Iruvudellava Bittu, a 2018 Kannada film.
Nandini Ramanna, better known by her stage name Bhavana , is an Indian actress who works predominantly in the Kannada film industry. A Bharatanatyam dancer, she has received three Karnataka State Film Awards and acted in Shanti, a film that entered the Guinness Book of Records. Bhavana Ramanna is the director of HomeTown Productions, a production house that conducts dance and music shows.
Mookajjiya Kanasugalu is a 1968 Kannada epic novel written by K. Shivaram Karanth. It won the Jnanpith Award in the year 1977. The novel is about the thoughts of human being of today's generation. It deals with the beliefs, the origin of tradition etc.
Bangarada Hoovu is a 1967 Indian Kannada language film directed, written and produced by B. A. Arasu Kumar. The film stars Rajkumar, V N Narayan,Kalpana, Udaykumar and Shylashri. Sarkaari Hiriya Praathamika Shaale, Kaasaragodu, Kodugé: Raamanna Rai is a 2018 Indian Kannada-language socio-political comedy film written, directed and produced by Rishab Shetty, presented by Sudeep. The film stars Anant Nag, Pramod Shetty, Ranjan, Sampath, Saptha Pavoor, Mahendra, Sohan Shetty, Prakash Thuminad, Manish Heroor and others.
The Shivarama Karantha Balavana is notable for its fame under the name of Jnanapeeta awardee Kota Shivarama Karanthar, who lived in Puttur. His home now houses a museum, a park, and a recreation center. This a multi-purpose tourist attraction, at Puttur, south part of Mangalore city in Karnataka, under trust managed District Administration of Dakshina Kannada and Kannada And Culture Department of Karntaka Government. It is a major tourist attraction of Puttur. It attracts large number of tourists due to the availability of multiple facilities.
