Moujiya or Ryougae Puzzle Mouja [a] is a falling blocks puzzle video game from Fujitsu Pasocom Systems, the consumer software division of Fujitsu. [1] Initially developed for computers running Windows 3.11 and above, it later got made into an arcade video game, [2] which itself was ported to popular home consoles of the time. [6] [4]

Gameplay

Moujiya’s gameplay is similar to Puyo Puyo , in that it is a falling blocks game where the units fall in pairs and must be grouped together with other units of the same type. Here, the units consist of yen coins, that are exchanged for one of the next denomination when enough coins are grouped side by side. When two ¥500 coins are grouped together, they are exchanged for a ¥1,000 banknote and are removed from the board. [1] This mechanic was later copied by Face and combined with Magical Drop ’s gameplay to make Money Idol Exchanger , which saw much wider success, being released across the world, possibly due to the popularity of SNK's Neo Geo arcade platform at the time. [7]

Releases and spin-offs

The game was originally released in 1995 for Windows 3.1 and above. A second version was released in 1997 for Windows 95 which allowed for online play.[ citation needed ] This version was also released on Macintosh.[ citation needed ]

In 1996, Etona licensed Moujiya from Fujitsu and commissioned Racjin to make an arcade conversion. [2] This game, made from the ground up, featured a completely new cast of characters and different garbage block mechanics from the original, among other lesser changes. [8] Etona's version was then ported to the Sega Saturn and also to the PlayStation shortly thereafter, with the publishing being handled by Virgin Interactive Entertainment. [6] In 1999, Hect would snatch up publishing rights for the PlayStation version and rerelease it under their Honkakuha de ¥1,300 Series budget label. [5]

In the 2000s, mobile game company BTD Studio would license Mouja for release on Japanese cellular services. Its first game was Chou Ge Moujiya, a cut down version of the arcade game released only on i-mode. [3] They would later make two spin-offs: Doubutsu de Moujiya, also only on i-mode, and Gals★Moujiya, part of their Gals Kiss series of burlesque games, released on i-mode, EZweb and S!Appli.[ citation needed ]

Notes

  1. Moujiya got released under a variety of slightly different spellings across its many ports and versions, sometimes used inconsistently within the same release, which become even more numerous when accounting for differing transliteration standards. Some of the names used are Mouja, Moudja, Moujiya, Moudjiya, Ryougae Puzzle Game Moujiya, Ryougae Puzzle Mouja and so forth (all variations of 両替パズルゲーム/両替パズル もうぢや/もうぢゃ).

This was the start of what can be considered a reboot of the Puyo Puyo franchise, with this entry's plot revolving around Professor Accord losing her flying cane.

<i>Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo</i> 1996 video game

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, released in Japan as Super Puzzle Fighter II X, is a tile-matching puzzle video game released in 1996 for the CP System II (CPS2) arcade board, by Capcom and its Capcom Coin-Op division. The game's title is a play on Super Street Fighter II Turbo, as there were no other Puzzle Fighter games at the time, and the game includes music and interface elements spoofing the Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers games. It was a response to Sega's Puyo Puyo 2 that had been sweeping the Japanese arcade scene.

<i>Bonanza Bros.</i> 1990 video game

Bonanza Bros. is a 3D-style, 2D side-scrolling stealth action game developed and released by Sega in 1990. It is one of the earliest arcade games powered by the Sega System 24 arcade system board. It was ported to various home systems, including the Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-CD, and several home computers.

<i>Landmaker</i> 1998 video game

Landmaker is an isometric arcade puzzle video game developed and released by Taito in 1998. It is a versus action puzzle game similar in appearance to Taito's own Puzzle Bobble, though it plays more similarly to Puyo Puyo or Baku Baku Animal. Puzzle Bobble 2 is a tile-matching video game by Taito. The first sequel to Puzzle Bobble, it is also known in Europe and North America as Bust-A-Move Again for arcades and Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition for home consoles. Released into the arcades in 1995, home conversions followed for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, and Windows platforms. The game was included in Taito Legends 2, but the US arcade version was included in the US PS2 version instead. Puzzle Bobble 3 is an action puzzle video game developed by Taito. The second sequel to Puzzle Bobble, it was released for arcades in September 1996 and later ported to the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Game Boy, Nintendo 64 and Microsoft Windows. Like its predecessors, the player is tasked with shooting balls at groups of balls, creating groups of three or more, which are then removed from play. Super Puzzle Bobble, released as Super Bust-A-Move in Europe and North America, is a puzzle video game in the Puzzle Bobble series. It was developed by Taito, and released on November 27, 2000 by Acclaim Entertainment for the PlayStation 2, and by CyberFront and EON Digital Entertainment for Windows in 2001. It was later ported to the Game Boy Advance that same year, the Japanese version under the name Super Puzzle Bobble Advance. <i>Octomania</i> 2007 video game

Octomania is a puzzle game by Compile Heart and Idea Factory for the Wii. It is an enhanced version of an arcade title released in 2006 running on Sega NAOMI hardware. Hyper-Devbox Japan helped port the game to the Wii by creating libraries so that the programmers could easily just recompile the source code of the arcade game, and then add new features. The game was published in North America by Conspiracy Entertainment. The game was supervised by Puyo Puyo creator Moo Niitani.

Puyo Puyo (ぷよぷよ), previously known as Puyo Pop outside Japan, is a series of tile-matching video games created by Compile. Sega has owned the franchise since 1998, with games after 2001 being developed by Sonic Team. Puyo Puyo was created as a spin-off franchise to Madō Monogatari, a series of first-person dungeon crawler role-playing games by Compile from which the Puyo Puyo characters originated. The series has sold over 10 million copies, including the Madō Monogatari games.

Puzzle & Action: Tant-R, is a puzzle video game developed and published by Sega in 1993 for the Sega System C in Japan. The first instalment in the Puzzle & Action trilogy, it is a spin-off of Bonanza Bros.. The characters from Bonanza Bros., Robo and Mobo, are featured as protagonists, functioning as detectives. A prison escapee is chased, and his henchmen interfere. A series of timed mini-games must be completed to defeat the henchmen. The game features references to western culture.

<i>Cosmo Gang the Puzzle</i> 1992 video game

Cosmo Gang the Puzzle is a 1992 falling block puzzle arcade video game developed and published by Namco worldwide. The third game in its Cosmo Gang series, succeeding that year's Cosmo Gang the Video, players stack groups of blocks and aliens known as Jammers in a vertical-oriented well. The objective is to clear as many objects on the screen before they reach the top of the screen. Blocks are cleared by aligning them into complete horizontal rows, while Jammers are cleared by defeating them with blue-colored spheres.
