Mount Paris ( 68°59′S70°50′W / 68.983°S 70.833°W / -68.983; -70.833 ) is a conspicuous mountain, about 2,800 m, 4 nautical miles (7 km) southeast of Mount Bayonne situated in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was first mapped by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Charcot, who named it for the French capital, Paris. The mountain was resighted in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) and charted as mountains, but subsequent study of air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, has caused the name to be restricted to this single mountain. Mount Paris is the third-highest peak of Alexander Island, while Mount Egbert remains second standing at 2,850 m in height.

A mountain is a large landform that rises above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth. Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in huge mountain ranges.

Mount Bayonne is a mountain, 1,500 m, forming the north extremity of the Rouen Mountains in Alexander Island. The mountain lies immediately north of Les Dents and Mount Paris. First mapped by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Charcot, who named it for the French city. Resighted from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) in 1936. Remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960.

Alexander Island island in the Bellingshausen Sea off Antarctica

Alexander Island, which is also known as Alexander I Island, Alexander I Land, Alexander Land, Alexander I Archipelago, and Zemlja Alexandra I, is the largest island of Antarctica. It lies in the Bellingshausen Sea west of Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula from which it is separated by Marguerite Bay and George VI Sound. George VI Ice Shelf entirely fills George VI Sound and connects Alexander Island to Palmer Land. The island partly surrounds Wilkins Sound, which lies to its west. Alexander Island is about 390 kilometres (240 mi) long in a north-south direction, 80 kilometres (50 mi) wide in the north, and 240 kilometres (150 mi) wide in the south. Alexander Island is the second largest uninhabited island in the world, after Devon Island.

Borchgrevink Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Borchgrevink Glacier is a large glacier in the Victory Mountains, Victoria Land, draining south between Malta Plateau and Daniell Peninsula, and thence projecting into Glacier Strait, Ross Sea, as a floating glacier tongue, the Borchgrevink Glacier Tongue, just south of Cape Jones. It was named by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition, 1957–58, for Carsten Borchgrevink, leader of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1898–1900. Borchgrevink visited the area in February 1900 and first observed the seaward portion of the glacier.

The Ford Ranges is a grouping of mountain ranges standing east of Sulzberger Ice Shelf and Block Bay in the northwest part of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. Discovered by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition on December 5, 1929, and named by Byrd for Edsel Ford of the Ford Motor Company, who helped finance the expedition.

Rouen Mountains

The Rouen Mountains are a prominent mountain range, reaching to about 2,800 m and extending 35 miles (60 km) NW-SE from Mount Bayonne to Care Heights and Mount Cupola, in north Alexander Island, Antarctica. This mountain range is known to occupy some of the highest peaks of Alexander Island, much like the nearby Douglas Range. Mount Paris is the highest point of the Rouen Mountains, exceeding 2,800 m approximately.

Mount Shelby is a mountain, 1,520 m, standing between Daspit Glacier and Bills Gulch at the head of Trail Inlet, on the east coast of Graham Land. Discovered by members of East Base of the United States Antarctic Service (USAS), 1939-41. It was photographed from the air in 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) under Ronne, and charted in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). Named by Ronne for Marjorie Shelby, who contributed her services as typist and editor in drafting the RARE prospectus and assisted in general expedition work prior to departure.

Explorers Range

Explorers Range is a large mountain range in the Bowers Mountains of Victoria Land, Antarctica, extending from Mount Bruce in the north to Carryer Glacier and McLin Glacier in the south. Named by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee (NZ-APC) for the northern party of New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1963–64, whose members carried out a topographical and geological survey of the area. The names of several party members are assigned to features in and about this range. All of the geographical features listed below lie situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

Apollo Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Apollo Glacier is a glacier, 9 nautical miles (17 km) long, flowing northeast and joining the lower part of Aphrodite Glacier 2 nautical miles (4 km) from the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Vivaldi Glacier is a glacier lying between the Colbert Mountains and the Lully Foothills, flowing south from Purcell Snowfield into the head of Schubert Inlet on the west coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The feature appears to be first shown on maps of the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) which photographed Alexander Island from the air in 1940. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. Named "Vivaldi Gap" by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1961, after Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741), Venetian composer. The name was amended to Vivaldi Glacier following review of Landsat program imagery, 1979, displaying flow lines in the feature.

Mount Nicholas is a mountain, 1,465 m, standing 5.5 nautical miles (10 km) south-southwest of Cape Brown and forming the northern limit of the Douglas Range on the east side of Alexander Island, Antarctica.

Mount Cupola Mountain in Antarctica

Mount Cupola is a dome-shaped mountain, 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) high, marking the southeastern limit of the Rouen Mountains in the northern part of Alexander Island. It was first photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and surveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. The descriptive name was given by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960. Mount Cupola is the fifth-highest point of Alexander Island, succeeded by Mount Huckle in the Douglas Range.

Mount Gunter is a conspicuous mountain, 1,970 metres (6,460 ft) high, with precipitous black rock cliffs on its west side, rising at the south side of Hariot Glacier, 3 nautical miles (6 km) east of Briggs Peak, on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was first roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1936–37, and was photographed by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in November 1947. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Edmund Gunter, an English mathematician whose "line of numbers" (1617) was the first step toward a slide rule; in 1620 he published tables of logarithms, sines and tangents, which revolutionized navigation.

Mount Ethelred

Mount Ethelred is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 2,470 metres (8,100 ft) high, 3 nautical miles (6 km) southeast of Mount Ethelwulf and 8 nautical miles (15 km) inland from George VI Sound, in the Douglas Range of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was probably first observed by Lincoln Ellsworth, who photographed the east side of the Douglas Range from the air on November 23, 1935; its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition. It was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named for Ethelred I, Saxon King of England, 865–871. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960. Mount Ethelred is the seventh highest peak of Alexander Island, proceeded by Mount Calais.

Mount Ethelwulf

Mount Ethelwulf is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 2,590 metres (8,500 ft) high, standing between Mount Egbert and Mount Ethelred at the head of Tumble Glacier, in the Douglas Range of northeast Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was probably first observed by Lincoln Ellsworth, who photographed the east side of the Douglas Range from the air on November 23, 1935; its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill. It was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named for Ethelwulf, Saxon King of England, 839–858. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960. Mount Ethelwulf is the fourth highest peak of Alexander Island, succeeded by Mount Paris and proceeded by Mount Huckle.

Himalia Ridge is a ridge running east–west on the north side of the Ganymede Heights massif, north-east of Jupiter Glacier, in the east of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and mapped from these photographs by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. The ridge was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee following British Antarctic Survey geological work, 1983–84, after Himalia, a satellite of the planet Jupiter, in association with Jupiter Glacier. The site lies within Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No.147.

Relay Hills is a group of low, ice-covered hills, mainly conical in shape, between Mount Edgell and Kinnear Mountains in western Antarctic Peninsula. First roughly surveyed from the ground by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936-37. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), November 1947. Resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), November 1958. The name, applied by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC), arose because both the BGLE and the FIDS sledging parties had to relay their loads through this area to the head of Prospect Glacier.

Mount Lassell is a snow-covered peak, 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) high, overlooking the head of Neptune Glacier in the southeast part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The peak appears to have been first sighted from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. It was remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. The peak was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for William Lassell, an English astronomer who discovered Umbriel and Ariel, satellites of the planet Uranus, and the satellite Triton, orbiting the planet Neptune.

Les Dents is a conspicuous landmark consisting of four toothlike peaks, uniform in height and rising to about 1,500 metres (5,000 ft) between Mount Bayonne and Mount Paris, situated within the Rouen Mountains in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The feature was first roughly mapped and named "Les Dents" by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot. It was further mapped, from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960.
