Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story is a Canadian-American television film, which premiered in 2013. [1] Directed by Andy Mikita, the film centres on hockey legend Gordie Howe's 1973 return to playing hockey with the new Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association. [2]

The film stars Michael Shanks as Howe, Kathleen Robertson as his wife Colleen Howe and Martin Cummins as Aeros coach Bill Dineen, as well as Lochlyn Munro, Dylan Playfair, Andrew Herr and Donnelly Rhodes in supporting roles. [3]

The film premiered on April 28, 2013, on CBC Television in Canada, and May 4, 2013, on Hallmark Channel in the United States.

The film received four Canadian Screen Award nominations at the 2nd Canadian Screen Awards, for Best TV Movie (Shanks), Best Lead Actor in a Television Film or Miniseries (Shanks), Best Lead Actress in a Television Film or Miniseries (Robertson) and Best Direction in a Dramatic Program or Miniseries (Mikita). [4] In 2020, the film was scheduled for rebroadcast on CBC's Movie Night in Canada , its temporary replacement for Hockey Night in Canada during the NHL shutdown in the COVID-19 pandemic. [5]

The Houston Aeros were a professional ice hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 to 1978.

The 1952–53 NHL season was the 36th season of the National Hockey League. The Montreal Canadiens were the Stanley Cup winners as they beat the Boston Bruins four games to one in the final series.

The 1958–59 NHL season was the 42nd season of the National Hockey League. Six teams each played 70 games. The Montreal Canadiens were the Stanley Cup champions as they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs four games to one in the best-of-seven final series. This marked the fourth consecutive Stanley Cup win for the Canadiens as they became the first team to win four in a row.

William Patrick "Foxy" Dineen was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and head coach. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks between 1953 and 1958. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1953 to 1971, was spent in the minor leagues. After his playing career Dineen became a coach and worked in the World Hockey Association from 1972 to 1979. He was the head coach for the Houston Aeros for all six seasons before coaching the Hartford Whalers for the 1978-79 season. The architect of a team in roster construction, Dineen's Aeros reached the playoffs in every season of their history and won the Avco World Trophy twice.

Marty Gordon Howe is a Canadian-American former professional ice hockey defenseman. Howe was drafted in the third round, 51st overall in the 1974 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. From 2001 to 2006, he was an assistant coach for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. He is the son of Colleen and Gordie Howe, older brother of Mark Howe, and nephew of Vic Howe. Howe now lives with his wife Mary in Glastonbury, Connecticut.

The 1955 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1954–55 season, and the culmination of the 1955 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested between the Montreal Canadiens, appearing in their fifth of ten straight Finals, and the defending champion Detroit Red Wings, in the third Detroit-Montreal Finals series of the 1950s and the second consecutively. The Red Wings once again defeated the Canadiens in seven games for their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship, fourth in six seasons, and seventh overall. The Red Wings would not win the Stanley Cup again until 1997.

Colleen Janet Joffa Howe was a sports agent who founded Power Play International and Power Play Publications to manage the business interests of her husband, Hall of Fame ice hockey player Gordie Howe, as well as those of their sons Marty and Mark. She was married to Gordie for 55 years, until her death. As a civic leader, she brought the first Junior A hockey team to the United States, built the first indoor rink for public use in Michigan, and ran for Congress. In 2000, as "Mrs. Hockey", Howe received the Wayne Gretzky International Award, presented to individuals "who have made major contributions to the growth and advancement of hockey in the United States"—from the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, along with her husband and their two sons Mark and Marty.
