Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa (born 11 November 1972) is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who served as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from June 2015 to January 2025. [1]

Early life

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was born in Agege, a town in Lagos State southwestern Nigeria on 11 November 1972. [2] He had his primary education at St Thomas Acquinas Pry School, Surulere, Lagos before he proceeded to Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary school, Mushin, Ilasamaja, Lagos where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate. [3] He received a bachelor's degree in Law from Lagos State University, Lagos in 2006. [4]

Political career

In 1999, he contested the seat of councilor at Agege local government under the Alliance for Democracy party and won. He served between 1999 and 2002. [5]

He was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Agege Constituency I in 2007. He was reelected in 2011, 2015 2019, 2023. [6] [7]

Amidst the #EndSARS saga in his home state, he was recorded on live TV saying "the LSHA will not acknowledge the death of miscreants at the hands of the Police Force" when calling for the one-minute silence for the victims of the #LekkiMassacre and others across Nigeria. [8]

Corruption Scandal

In 2020, Sahara Reporters reportedly released allegation reports on misappropriation of public funds against Obasa. He, however, denied all the allegations. [9] [10] [11] [12]

Sahara Reporters later reported that Obasa was taken in for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 8 and 9 October 2020. According to an inside source confirmed to Sahara Reporters that Obasa feigned sickness during the interrogation at the EFCC's office, which caused interrogation to be stopped. Obasa had to be taken to the EFCC office's sick bay before being released on bail. [13] Obasa then supposedly requested the return of his passport, ostensibly to seek medical treatment abroad before going on Umrah to meet with Bola Tinubu in Saudi Arabia. Obasa remains under investigation by the EFCC for allegations of misappropriation and fraud. [14]

On 13 January 2025, Obasa was impeached by the majority members of the Lagos State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda was immediately elected and sworn in as his successor. [15] [16] [17] [18]

Since his election in April 2015, anti-graft war remain one of his topmost priority. The U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, at the World Economic Forum held at Davos in Switzerland extolled Buhari's the anti-corruption fight. In October 2015, the United Kingdom pledged her support for Buhari's anti-corruption war. However, the president has been criticized and accused of leading a selective war against corruption. Several people claimed that his war against corruption focus on members of the opposition party, the People's Democratic Party.

The 8th Lagos State House of Assembly is the legislative branch of the Lagos State Government inaugurated on June 8, 2015. The assembly will run its course till June 3, 2019. The assembly is unicameral with 41 representatives elected from each constituencies of the state. The incumbent Speaker of the 8th Legislative Assembly is Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa and the Deputy speaker is Hon. Eshinloku Sanni. The election of representative for the 8th legislative assembly was held on April 28, 2015.

Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi is a Nigerian politician who served as the senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2023. The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Lagos State was held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Lagos State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections coincided with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

Elvert Ayambem Ekom is a Nigerian politician currently serving as speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly since June 2023. A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he represents Ikom 2 State Constituency. Ayambem was nominated for the speakership position by Kingsley Ntui representing Etung Constituency and the motion was seconded by Eyo Okon Edet representing Bakassi Constituency. Ayambem was elected speaker unchallenged on 13 June 2023 following the proclamation of the governor of the state for the inauguration of the 10th state assembly. He succeeded Eteng William who was speaker of the 9th assembly and was elected to the 10th Nigerian Senate.

Rt Hon Oludaisi Elemide is a Nigerian politician currently serving as the speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly. He was elected speaker of the house on 23 January 2024 following the impeachment of Olakunle Oluomo on the allegations of financial embezzlement and highhandedness against members of the assembly. Elemide, a member of the All Progressive Congress is a third term member of the assembly representing Odeda State Constituency.

Fatai Mojeed Adebola is Nigerian politician. He currently serves as the State Representatives representing Ibeju Lekki I constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda is a Nigerian politician and the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. She has been the lawmaker representing Apapa I constituency since June 2015. Meranda was sworn in as speaker on 13 January 2025 following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
