The 2019 Lagos State House of Assembly election was held on 9 March 2019, to elect members of the Lagos State House of Assembly in Nigeria. All the 40 seats were up for election in the Lagos State House of Assembly. APC won all the 40 available seats. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
Upon the opening of the 9th State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa (APC-Agege I) was elected as Speaker of the House while Wasiu Sanni (APC-Lagos Island I) and Agunbiade Sanai (APC-Ikorodu I) became Deputy Speaker and House Leader, respectively. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

Lagos State is a state in South West, Nigeria. Of the 36 Nigerian states, Lagos is the second most populous state but the smallest in terms of land mass. Bounded to the south by the Bight of Benin and to the west by the international border with Benin for 10 km, Lagos State borders Ogun State to the north for about 283 km, making it the only Nigerian state to border only one other state. Named for the city of Lagos—the most populous city in Africa—the state was formed from the Western Region and the former Federal Capital Territory on 27 May 1967.
Lagos State University, popularly known as LASU, is a Lagos state government-owned university established in 1983. Its main campus is situated at Ojo, with sub-campuses at Ikeja and Epe. The university was set up "for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence". The university caters to over 35,000 students. The university was established during the administration of Late Lateef Kayode Jakande. The university offers diploma, degree and post graduate programmes, including an MBA programme. LASU was ranked among the top 600 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020. On 23 June 2021, LASU emerged as the best young university in Nigeria having been below the age of 50 years to be added. Times Higher Education ranked the Lagos State University as the second best university in Nigeria on 2 September 2020, and was the only state university included in the rankings for 2022. The university has attracted international funding, including for the establishment of a World Bank Group Africa Centre for Excellence on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is the presiding officer of the Lagos State House of Assembly, elected by its membership. The Speaker is second in line of succession to the Lagos State governorship, after the deputy governor. The Speaker also represents the members of his or her constituency. Since inauguration of the state house of assembly on 2 October 1979, there have been 10 legislative assemblies with 8 representatives holding the office of Speaker. The current Speaker is Mojisola Meranda who was elected on 13 January 2025, following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa.

Mojisola Lasbat Meranda is a Nigerian politician and the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. She has been the lawmaker representing Apapa I constituency since June 2015. Meranda was sworn in as speaker on 13 January 2025 following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
