The 2014 Osun State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 9 August 2014, the APC nominee Rauf Aregbesola won re-election, defeating Iyiola Omisore of the PDP. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Contents

Rauf Aregbesola emerged APC after he was returned as the sole candidate. He picked Titilayo Laoye-Tomori as his running mate. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Iyiola Omisore was the PDP candidate with Adejare Bello as his running mate. 20 candidates contested in the election. [10]

The Governor of Osun State is elected using the plurality voting system.

Primary election

APC primary

Rauf Aregbesola won the primary election after he emerged unopposed. [11] [12]

PDP primary

The PDP primary election was held on 5 April 2014. Iyiola Omisore won the primary election polling 1,128 votes against 3 other candidates. His closest rival was Olasunkanmi Akinlabi who scored 45 votes, Wole Oke scored 4 votes while Isiaka Adeleke withdrew. [13] [14] [15] [16]

Iyiola Ajani Omisore is a Nigerian businessman, engineer, and politician who served as deputy governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003. Subsequently, he served as a member of the Nigerian Senate for Osun East from 2003 to 2011. He is a former national secretary of the All Progressives Congress.

Odunayo Omobolanle Olagbaju was a Nigerian legislator from Osun State. He was stabbed to death in December 2001 right in front of a police station in Ile Ife, Nigeria. In May 2002, eleven suspects were arraigned for the killing. In August, seven additional suspects were arrested. By the end of 2002, the original eleven had been freed on bail, but the incident remained under investigation.

Alhaji Fatai Akinade Akinbade is a Nigerian politician and the former Secretary to the State Government in Osun State. He was a contender to become the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governorship of Osun State in the April 2011 elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Nigeria, along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Founded on 6 February 2013 from a merger of Nigeria's three largest opposition parties, the party came to power following the victory of party candidate Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. This marked the first time in Nigerian history that an opposition party unseated a governing party and power was transferred peacefully.

The 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election took place on 16 July 2022, to elect the governor of Osun State. Incumbent All Progressives Congress Governor Gboyega Oyetola was eligible for re-election but lost by a 3.5% margin to former Senator Ademola Adeleke—the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party. Adeleke and his running mate, Kola Adewusi, were inaugurated on 27 November. However, the Election Petition Tribunal overturned the result on 27 January 2023, awarding the win to Oyetola; Adeleke immediately appealed the ruling and remains in office pending the results of further litigation.
