PDP candidate and former governor Gabriel Suswam won the election, defeating APC candidate Mimi Adzape Orubibi and 18 other party candidates. George Akume is a Nigerian politician who is the current Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs. He was a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was the Minority Leader of the Senate from June 2011 to June 2015. He was also the Governor of Benue State from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He was the first Governor of Benue State to have completed two terms in office. He was elected governor of Benue State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was then elected to the Senate.
Emmanuel Yisa Orker-Jev is a Nigerian politician and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He defeated George Akume in the 2019 general elections for the Benue North-West Senatorial District by polling 157,726 votes to the Akume's 115,422. The total valid votes cast was 287,028 votes.
Benue North-West Senatorial District is well known as Zone B in Benue State. The senatorial district has seven local governments which include Buruku,Gboko, Tarka, Guma, Makurdi, Gwer and Gwer West. There are 90 electoral wards and 1,286 polling units as of 2019 polls. The current representative of Benue North-West Senatorial District is Emmanuel Orke-Jev of the People's Democratic Party, PDP.
The 2023 Benue State gubernatorial election will take place in early 2023, to elect the governor of Benue State. Incumbent PDP Governor Samuel Ortom is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. The primaries will be scheduled for late 2022 or early 2023.
