The 2019 Kwara State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. [1] [2] [3] APC's AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq polled 73.12% of the total votes, ahead of PDP's Razak Atunwa who got 25.31% of votes trailing behind by a margin of 216,792 votes, and several minor party candidates. [4] APC won in all 16 LGAs of the state. [5] [6] [7]

Contents

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq from Kwara Central senatorial district [8] emerged winner at the gubernatorial primary after defeating Yammah Abdullahi. [9] His running mate is Kayode Alabi from Kwara South senatorial district. [10] [11]

There were 35 candidates who aspired for the governorship seat, 33 were males and two female [12] (although there were initially three females). [13] [14]

Electoral system

The Governor of Kwara State was elected using the plurality voting system.

Primary election

PDP primary

The PDP primary election was held on 30 September 2018. There were about 2,227 accredited delegate voters present from 193 wards across the 16 LGAs of the state. Razak Atunwa emerged winner with 1,555 votes defeating closest rival, Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi who polled 578 votes. [15] [16] [17] In the course of the contest, eight out of the 10 aspirants stepped down, leaving just: Hon. Razak Atunwa and Senator Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi, both lawmakers. Those who withdrew included: Mal. Bolaji Abdullahi, Prof. Suleiman Abubakar, Alh. Mohammed Ajia, Dr. Ali Ahmad, Hon. Haman Patigi, Alh. Ladi Hassan, Hon. Zakari Mohammed and Alhaji Saka Isau (SAN). APC primary

The APC primary elections in Kwara State was held via direct primaries [32] [33] [34] between Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October 2018. [35] [36] It was initially put on hold. [37] AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq emerged the winner having polled 29,098 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Yammah Abdullahi with 22,116 votes and 23 other contestants as the party was reported to have officially handed out the names of 25 governorship candidates. [38] [39] [40] [41] Amongst which are Alh. Lukman Mustapha 14,233 votes, Prof. Oba AbdulRaheem 23,298; Alh. Hakeem Lawal 18,758 votes, Alh. Mooshood Murtala 9,511 votes, Isaq Modibbo Kawu 5,060 votes, Alh. Yakubu Gobir 2,420 votes, and Tajudeen Makama Audu 3,127 votes. [42] [43] [44] Mohammed Belgore (SAN) and Alh. Yahaya Seriki stepped down in support of AbdulRasaq, while Saliu Mustapha and Mashood Mustapha were disqualified. Results

A total of 35 candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election. [12] [59] [60] APC governorship aspirant, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, won election polling 331,546 votes, defeating PDP's Razak Atunwa who came second with 114,754 votes, and several minority party candidates, [61] [62] [63] [64] [65] [66] [67] [68] [69] [70] with an early lead. [71]

The total number of registered voters in Kwara State was 1,376,372 while 464,393 voters were accredited. Total number of votes cast was 463,427, while total number of valid votes was 453,433. Total rejected votes were 9,994. [6] [72]

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Nigeria, along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The 2019 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three were held on 2 March 2019 with the election for Rivers State being postponed until 4 April, while the Kogi State and Bayelsa State elections were both held on 16 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2015.

The 2019 Zamfara State gubernatorial election occurred on 9 March 2019. APC's Mukhtar Shehu Idris polled 67.41% of the total popular votes, defeating PDP's Bello Matawalle who got 23.89% of the total votes and trailed behind by a margin of 345,089 votes, and several minor party candidates. APC swept the entire 14 LGAs of the state, winning in all. It was, however, Matawalle, who was later declared winner by the INEC and sworn in as governor after the verdict of the Supreme Court, which declared Idris' votes as 'wasted'.

The 2015 Kwara State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on April 12, 2015. Incumbent APC Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed won re-election for a second term, defeating PDP Simon Ajibola and 15 other party candidates.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. Muhammad Dele Belgore is a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He was the 2011 Action Congress of Nigeria's (ACN) Kwara State governorship candidate in the 2011 Kwara State gubernatorial election. However he lost out to the PDP's Governorship candidate, Abdulfatah Ahmed who became the Governor of Kwara state. Belgore is a native of Ilorin in Kwara state.
