The 2016 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 26 November 2016, the APC nominee Rotimi Akeredolu won election, defeating Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Rotimi Akeredolu emerged APC gubernatorial candidate after scoring 669 votes and defeating his closest rival, Segun Abraham, who received 635 votes, Olusola Oke came third with 583 votes and Ajayi Boroffice had 471 votes. [7] [8] He picked Agboola Ajayi as his running mate. [9] Eyitayo Jegede was the PDP candidate with Prince John Ola Mafo as his running mate. [10] [11] 28 candidates contested in the election. [12]

Primary election

APC primary

The APC primary election was held on September 4, 2016. Rotimi Akeredolu won the primary election polling 669 votes against 3 other candidates. His closest rival, Segun Abraham, had 635 votes, Olusola Oke came third with 583 votes and Ajayi Boroffice received 471 votes. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21]

PDP primary

The PDP primary election was held on August 22, 2016. Eyitayo Jegede won the primary election polling 760 votes against Hon. Saka Lawal, the deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2012 governorship election, who received 22 votes. [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [13] [14] [27]

A total number of 28 candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election. [28]

The total number of registered voters in the state was 1,647,973, while 584,997 voters were accredited. Total number of votes cast was 580,887, while number of valid votes was 551,272. Rejected votes were 29,615. [29] [12]

The 2019 Gombe State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 9 March 2019, the APC nominee Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya won the election, defeating Usman Bayero Nafada of the PDP. Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya emerged APC gubernatorial candidate after scoring 859 votes and defeating his closest rival, Mohammed Jibrin Barde who received 463 votes. He picked Manasseh Daniel Jatau as his running mate.

The 2019 Zamfara State gubernatorial election occurred on 9 March 2019. APC's Mukhtar Shehu Idris polled 67.41% of the total popular votes, defeating PDP's Bello Matawalle who got 23.89% of the total votes and trailed behind by a margin of 345,089 votes, and several minor party candidates. APC swept the entire 14 LGAs of the state, winning in all. It was, however, Matawalle, who was later declared winner by the INEC and sworn in as governor after the verdict of the Supreme Court, which declared Idris' votes as 'wasted'.

Incumbent PDP Governor Okezie Ikpeazu won re-election for a second term, defeating APC's Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, and several minor party candidates. The major contenders for the race signed a peace accord agreement in January 2019.

The 2012 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred on October 20, 2012. Incumbent governor, LP's Olusegun Mimiko won election for a second term, defeating other party candidates. Mimiko received 43.79% of the total vote and won in 13 of the state's 18 LGAs, closely followed by PDP's Olusola Oke who won in two LGAs with 26.25% of total votes, while the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who won in three LGAs came third with 24.15% of the votes. Mimiko becomes the first Incumbent governor of Ondo State to be re-elected.

The 2020 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 19 September 2020, in Edo State, and 10 October 2020, in Ondo State. The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2016. The All Progressives Congress' Rotimi Akeredolu was defending the Governor's office of Ondo while APC-turned-PDP Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was defending his office. Both won reelection, leading to no net change in terms of overall party control of governorships.

The 2023 Niger State gubernatorial election was held on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Niger State, concurrent with elections to the Niger State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election — which was postponed from its original 11 March date — will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Abubakar Sani Bello was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Mohammed Umar Bago — House of Representatives member for Chanchaga — retained the office for the APC by a margin of 9.4% over former commissioner Isah Liman Kantigi, the PDP nominee.

The 2024 Ondo State gubernatorial election took place on 16 November 2024. Incumbent APC governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ran for election to a full term and won with over 366,000 votes, defeating former deputy governor Agboola Ajayi of the PDP who came second with 117,000 votes, and 15 other candidates.
