The 2009 Ekiti State gubernatorial election was held on 25 April 2009. [1] [2] It was, however, not until 5 May 2009, that the exercise was concluded due to electoral violence. [3] [4] [5] [6] Incumbent PDP Governor Segun Oni won re-election in the supplementary election, defeating AC Kayode Fayemi candidate to emerge winner. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

Segun Oni emerged winner in the PDP gubernatorial primary election. His running mate was Sikiru Tae Lawal. [17]

Electoral system

The Governor of Ekiti State is elected using the plurality voting system.

Results

The two main contenders registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the re-run election were PDP Governor Segun Oni, who won the contest, and ACN's Kayode Fayemi, who follows closely. The election results were later legally contested by the Fayemi in the court. [3] [18] [19] [20]

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), formerly known as Action Congress (AC), was a Nigerian political party formed via the merger from the coming together of a faction of Alliance for Democracy, the Justice Party, the Advance Congress of Democrats, and several other minor political parties in September 2006. Olusegun Oni is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Ekiti State from 29 May 2007 to 17 February 2009 and from 6 May 2009 to 15 October 2010. He was a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 2014 he defected from the PDP and joined the newly formed opposition party All Progressive Congress (APC) where He was given the position of Deputy National Chairman South from 2014 to 2020.

The 2018 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 14 July 2018. APC Governor Kayode Fayemi who ruled from 2010 to 2014 won re-election for a second term, defeating Kolapo Olushola of the PDP.

The 2015 Borno State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11, 2015. Incumbent Governor APC's Kashim Shettima won election for a second term, defeating PDP's Gambo Lawan and several minor party candidates. Shettima received 94.92% of the vote.

The 2015 Ogun State gubernatorial election occurred on 11 April 2015. Incumbent Governor APC's Ibikunle Amosun won election for a second term, defeating PDP's Adegboyega Isiaka and several minor party candidates. Amosun received 60.38% of the vote.

The 2014 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on 21 June 2014, the PDP nominee Ayo Fayose won election, defeating Kayode Fayemi of the APC.

The 2012 Bayelsa State gubernatorial election occurred on February 11, 2012. PDP's Seriake Dickson won election for a first term, defeating other party candidates. Dickson received 89% of the total vote.

The 2007 Lagos State gubernatorial election occurred on 14 April 2007. Babatunde Raji Fashola of the AC defeated other candidates, by polling 599,300 votes, PDP's Musiliu Olatunde Obanikoro was closest contender with 383,956 votes.

The 2012 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred on October 20, 2012. Incumbent governor, LP's Olusegun Mimiko won election for a second term, defeating other party candidates. Mimiko received 43.79% of the total vote and won in 13 of the state's 18 LGAs, closely followed by PDP's Olusola Oke who won in two LGAs with 26.25% of total votes, while the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who won in three LGAs came third with 24.15% of the votes. Mimiko becomes the first Incumbent governor of Ondo State to be re-elected.

The 2003 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred on April 19, 2003. PDP's Ayo Fayose won election for a first tenure, defeating Incumbent Governor, AD's Niyi Adebayo and three other candidates.

The 2008 Adamawa State gubernatorial by-election occurred on April 26, 2008. Incumbent PDP Governor Murtala Nyako won re-election in the supplementary election, defeating ACN candidate to emerge winner.

The 2008 Bayelsa State gubernatorial election occurred on May 24, 2008. Incumbent PDP Governor Timipre Sylva won re-election in the supplementary election, defeating AC candidate, Ebitimi Amgbare, to emerge winner. Sylva won in six LGAs of the state.

The 2022 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 18 June 2022, in Ekiti State, and on 16 July 2022, in Osun State. The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2018. Before the elections, the All Progressives Congress held both offices with Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi being term-limited after serving his second nonconsecutive term and Osun Governor Gboyega Oyetola running for a second term with his party's nomination. In the post-elections situation, the APC held Ekiti with a victory for former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji but lost Osun as Oyetola was defeated by former Senator Ademola Adeleke—the nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The 2022 Ekiti State gubernatorial election took place on 18 June 2022, to elect the Governor of Ekiti State. Incumbent APC governor Kayode Fayemi was term-limited and could not seek a third term. Former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji held the office for the APC by a 30% margin over first runner-up and SDP nominee—former Governor Olusegun Oni.

Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, is a Nigerian politician who has served as the governor of Ekiti State since 2022. He is a former Secretary to the Ekiti State Government and a former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Ekiti State. He was elected governor during the 2022 Ekiti State gubernatorial election, having defeated Olusegun Oni of the Social Democratic Party and Bisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party.
