Kayode Fayemi emerged APC gubernatorial candidate after scoring 941 votes and defeating his closest rival, Segun Oni, who received 481 votes. He picked Bisi Egbeyemi as his running mate. [15] [16] Kolapo Olushola was the PDP candidate with Deji Ogunsakin as his running mate. [17] [18] [19] [20] 35 candidates contested in the election. [21] [22] [23] [24]

Primary election

APC primary

The APC primary election was held on 12 May 2018. Kayode Fayemi won the primary election polling 941 votes against 33 other candidates. His closest rival was Segun Oni, a former governor of the state, who came second with 481 votes, Kayode Ojo came third with 281 votes. PDP primary

The PDP primary election was held on 8 May 2018. Kolapo Olushola emerged as a consensus candidate, with Adebayo Clement Adeyeye as his running mate. [42] [43] [44] [45] [46] [47]

A total number of 35 candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election.

The total number of registered voters in the state was 909,585, while 405,861 voters were accredited. Total number of votes cast was 403,451, while number of valid votes was 384,594. Rejected votes were 18,857.

John Olukayode Fayemi ; born 9 February 1965) is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Ekiti State from 2018 to 2022. He previously served in office between 2010 and 2014 before losing re-election to Ayodele Fayose. He was also the Minister of Solid Minerals Development in President Muhammadu Buhari's cabinet from 11 November 2015 to 30 May 2018, when he resigned to contest for a second term as Governor of Ekiti State. Former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji held the office for the APC by a 30% margin over first runner-up and SDP nominee—former Governor Olusegun Oni.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Ekiti State held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Ekiti State. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele representing Ekiti Central, Adetumbi Olubunmi representing Ekiti North and Adebayo Clement Adeyeye representing Ekiti South all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress; however, Adeyeye's win was later overturned, and the seat awarded to PDP incumbent Abiodun Olujimi.

Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, is a Nigerian politician who has served as the governor of Ekiti State since 2022. He is a former Secretary to the Ekiti State Government and a former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Ekiti State. He was elected governor during the 2022 Ekiti State gubernatorial election, having defeated Olusegun Oni of the Social Democratic Party and Bisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
