Mudiwa Hood is a Zimbabwean rapper, singer and actor. [1]

Early life and education

Hood was born Mudiwa Hood in 1985 in Harare and grew up in Chitungwiza, attending Nyazura High School. [2] He later earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Economics and Phycology, as well as a Masters in Business Administration (Finance) from Africa University. [3]

He began his recording career using the surname "Hood" which came from his biological great-grandfather. In 2019, Hood announced he was legally changing his surname to Hood because the Mtandwa surname came from his grandfather's step-father after his great-grandfather Hood abandoned the family. [4]

In 2012, Hood began recording his first songs at CraigBone Studios in Chitungwiza, releasing the singles "Chaputika Zvinestaira", "Anhu Acho Tisu", and "Ndaita Mari". [5] In 2013, Hood signed a record deal with Demon Proof Records but left the label in 2015, launching HoodNation Records a year later.[ citation needed ]

"Ndaita Mari" (the Shona language title translates to English as "I Made Money") topped Zimbabwean music charts for several weeks and won four awards within a year of its release. [1] In 2015, Steward Bank name Hood as a brand ambassador, using "Ndaita Mari" in its commercials, [6] as well as brand ambassador for Ster-Kinekor Zimbabwe. [7]

Hood's follow-up releases "Number 1" and "Mwana waMambo" were on the Star FM Zimbabwe Gospel Greats top-20 chart for several weeks with "Number 1" being on the chart from September 2013 to May 2014. [8] The 2014 single "Love yaSolo" landed on the Power FM Zimbabwe top-10 chart, [9] as did the 2015 release "Shinga," featuring Nox. [10]

In 2017, Hood was cast in the ZBC TV drama series Muzita Rababa, which was named best Zimbabwe television series at the 2020 National Arts Merit Awards. [11] In the series, he portrays a church choir leader. [12] June 2021, Mudiwa Hood started a reality television programme, UnderTheHood, for ZBC TV. [13]

In 2020, Hood authored and launched a book titled Shut Up and Make Money. [14]

Hood was married to Angelica Colchèita-Hood. They divorced in 2020. They have one child. [25]

<i>Cook Off</i> 2017 Zimbabwean romantic comedy film by Tomas Brickhill

Cook Off is a 2017 Zimbabwean romantic comedy film written and directed by Tomas Brickhill. Set in contemporary middle class society of Harare, the film stars Tendaiishe Chitima, Fungai Majaya and Tehn Diamond. Production of the film was constantly hit with power failures, budget constraints, anti-government protests and riots which erupted during the final stages of the Presidency of Robert Mugabe. It became the first film to be released after the Zimbabwe Mugabe era which lasted for nearly 40 years. The film also became the first Zimbabwean film to be streamed on Netflix. It received international media attention since its release on the Netflix platform in June 2020. It is only the second Zimbabwean film to receive international attention after Neria. The film is hailed as one of the finest ever films in the Cinema of Zimbabwe after Neria and Yellow Card and opened to extremely positive response from Zimbabweans. The film is credited with shattering stereotypes of the Zimbabwean film industry which had been crippled by economic crisis and hyperinflation in the country.

Soul Muzavazi Musaka, known professionally as Soul Jah Love, was an award-winning Zimbabwean musician credited as a pioneer of mainstream Zimdancehall. He was declared a hero for his contributions to music. Among several hit singles, Soul Jah Love had tracks "Ndini Uya Uya", "Gum-kum" (2012),"Pamamonya Ipapo."
