Muhammad Garba is a Nigerian journalist, [1] and a politician from Kano State who is a Commissioner of Information. [2] and a member of the Steering Committee of International Federation of Journalists. [3]
Muhammad was born on 22 November 1964 at Yakasai Quarters in Kano Municipal of Kano state. He attended Kofar Nassarawa Primary School and Teachers College,Sumaila he obtained his 1st and 2nd Degree from Bayero University Kano. [4] [5]
Muhammad begins journalism career in 1989 with Triumph Publishing Company Limited,Kano as a reporter and served in various states of the federation as correspondent. He later grew in his career to serve as Sub-Editor,Chief Sub-Editor,Group News Editor,and Deputy Editor. [4] He had also served as a member of Editorial Board of many National Newspapers. Muhammed Garba has held various responsibilities that include Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1993 and subsequently Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State Abdullahi Umar Ganduje between 1999 and 2003. [1] [3] He begins his union activism as Chairman of his Chapel-The Triumph,which is under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),Kano State. He was later elected two-term chairman of the state council of the union and was its Deputy National President,and later become Presidency of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ in 2009. Muhammad was also the President of West African Journalists Association (WAJA) who was elected at Bamako,Mali and he was the President of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) who was elected at Casablanca,Morocco 2009. Muhammad is Member of the Steering Committee of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) who was elected at Dublin,Ireland. Muhammad was appointed Commissioner of Information by Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2015. [6] [7] [8]

The 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Kano State,concurrent with elections to the Kano State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. Abba Kabir Yusuf of New Nigerian People won the election.
The 2021 Kano local elections were held on January 16,2021,to elect 44 local government chairmen and 484 local government councillors in all 44 local government areas. As in the 2018 elections,the Kano All Progressives Congress won all 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship seats.
On 30 November 2021,a severely overloaded boat carrying more than 50 people,mostly children aged between 8 and 15,capsized on the Watari Dam in Kano State,Nigeria. At least 29 are confirmed dead and 13 more are missing.
