The Museum of Science and Technology in Accra, Ghana was established in 1963 [1] and first opened its doors in 1965. [2] The museum is under the administration of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and the National Commission on Culture. [3]

Background

The aim in establishing the museum was to create an awareness of past and present developments in science and technology in Ghana. Two lecturers from the University of Ghana presented a proposal to Kwame Nkrumah, who was the President of Ghana at the time. [2] The original museum building has been shut down and the exhibits have migrated into its current building which experience enormous delays in its construction. [4]

Location

The museum is located in the heart of Accra. It is located close to the intersection of Barnes Road to the east and Liberia Road to the south in Accra. West of the museum is the University of Ghana Accra City Campus and to the north are the offices of the National Service Scheme and the Regional Coordination Council.

Activities

In addition to displaying exhibits to the public, the museum contains a library. It also organises educational activities for school children. [2] In 2019, there was an Evolution of Science exhibition funded by Wellcome which highlighted activities related to health and space research. [5]

Opening hours

The museum usually opens daily on week days from 9:00 am to 4:30pm. It also charges gate fees. [2]

Environmental Protection Agency (Ghana) Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency, is an agency of Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, established by EPA Act 490 (1994). Fort Vernon

Fort Vernon was a military structure designed to facilitate the slave trade. The Royal African Company built the fort in 1742 near Prampram, a town in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was built out of cheap materials – rough stones and swish. The Danes destroyed the fort before 1783. The British rebuilt it in 1806, but it soon started to collapse and was abandoned in about 1816. It was re-occupied by the British in 1831 but was again abandoned in 1844. It subsequently became ruins.

The Ghana Library Authority, established in 1950 as the Ghana Library Board, was the first public library service in sub-Saharan Africa. The public library movement in Ghana began in 1928, as a personal effort of the then Anglican Bishop Orfeur Anglionby of Accra. In 1946, the Aglionby Library Management Committee worked with the British Council Advisory Committee towards library development in the then Gold Coast. In 2018, His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo appointed a Ghanaian Social Entrepreneur, Mr Hayford Siaw as GhLA Chief Executive Officer. In May 2021, the Authority was shortlisted for the LBF International Excellence Awards in the 'Library of the Year' Category.

Accra Technical University Public technical university school in Accra, Ghana

The Accra Technical University was established in 1949 as a Technical School in Ghana and commissioned in 1957 as Accra Technical Institute and converted into a Technical University by the Parliament of Ghana in 2013.
