The Windermere House is a historic hotel and resort located in Windermere, Ontario in the Muskoka region. The name Windermere comes from the name of a village and lake in Northern England, locals know Windermere as The Lady of the Lakes. It was built in 1870 in Victorian style, originally as a boarding house, and overlooks Lake Rosseau. It was built by Thomas Aitken as his home on the land he bought in 1863 after moving from Scotland. When the house was becoming full with guests, Thomas Aitken built a new home nearby which would later become the Windermere Cottage. Windermere House remained in family hands after his death in 1919 until 1981 when it was acquired by an investment group. The land was originally intended for Aitken to use for farming but when the land did not prove prosperous, he built his house by the lake.

It is located almost entirely in the Township municipality of Lake of Bays, which is named after the lake, with the exception of the southwest arm of the lake which is in the Town of Huntsville. Ontario Highway 35 runs north and east of the lake.

Port Sandfield, Ontario

Port Sandfield is a community on Lake Rosseau in Ontario, Canada, located within and governed by the municipality of Muskoka Lakes. It was founded in 1870, when a canal was built connecting Lake Joseph to Lake Rosseau. Alexander Peter Cockburn, a member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament and founder and first President of the Muskoka Settlers’ Association played a leading role in getting the canal funded. The canal was funded at the same time as a lock at Port Carling. The canal and lock allowed a fleet of steamboats to carry freight, mail, cargo and timber over the three largest lakes in the county of Muskoka.

It is topographically part of the Almaguin Highlands region, and is part of the census subdivision of Unorganized Centre Parry Sound District. The township includes the communities of Bear Valley, Carr, Farleys Corners and Golden Valley. Although not an incorporated municipality, the township is served by two local services boards: Bear Valley and Golden Valley are served by the LSB of Loring, Port Loring and District, while Carr and Farleys Corners are served by the LSB of Restoule.
