The Mykola Lysenko Music Competition, named after Mykola Lysenko, was founded in 1962 by the Ukrainian composers Andriy Shtoharenko, Yevhen Stankovych, Myroslav Skoryk, Levko Kolodub, the singer Yelyzaveta Chavdar, pianists Yevhen Rzhanov and the composer's granddaughter Ariadna Lysenko. [1] In 1992, on the 150th anniversary of Lysenko's birth, it acquired international status. [2]
Throughout its existence, it has become one of the most prestigious music competitions in Ukraine. Until 1992, it was called the Ukrainian Young Artists Competition. It has been held in Ukrainian various cities, such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia. Winners’ Concert was held at Pyotr Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. [3] One of the notable musicians who participated in it was pianist Sophia Agranovich, who won in 1966 and 1970. [4] Since 1992 it has been called the Mykola Lysenko International Music Competition.
The competition jury panel is composed of distinguished musicians from various countries, many of whom being Ukrainian.
The competition repertoire of each participant must include works of classic music as well as works by Lysenko and other Ukrainian composers.
Thanks to the Lysenko Competition a powerful start in career was given to a number of Ukrainian artists, known worldwide: pianists – Liudmyla Martsevych, Etella Tchupryk, Milana Tcherniavska; violinists Oleksandr Semchuk, Olha Rivniak, and Dima Tkachenko; cellists Hanna Nuzha, Ivan Kucher; singers Lidia Zabiliasta, Andrii Shkurhan, Volodymyr Hryshko, Mykola Shopsha and many others.
The Lysenko Competition is not just another music tournament with joyful victories and upset losses intermingled, but it is above all a forum of masters of various generations, exchange of experience and masterclass of skillful performance.
The Mykola Lysenko Music Competition is a visiting-card of the Ukrainian music culture and is among the well-known leading competitions in Eastern Europe such as The Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia, Chopin Competition in Poland and several others.

Ukrainian music covers diverse and multiple component elements of the music that is found in the Western and Eastern musical civilization. It also has a very strong indigenous Slavic and Christian uniqueness whose elements were used among the areas that surround modern Ukraine.
The International Tchaikovsky Competition is a classical music competition held every four years in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russia, for pianists, violinists, and cellists between 16 and 32 years of age and singers between 19 and 32 years of age. The competition is named after Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Mykola Vitaliiovych Lysenko was a Ukrainian composer, pianist, conductor and ethnomusicologist of the late Romantic period. In his time he was the central figure of Ukrainian music, with an oeuvre that includes operas, art songs, choral works, orchestral and chamber pieces, and a wide variety of solo piano music. He is often credited with founding a national music tradition during the Ukrainian national revival, in the vein of contemporaries such as Grieg in Norway, The Five in Russia as well as Smetana and Dvořák in what is now the Czech Republic.

Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych was a Ukrainian composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist, and teacher. His music was inspired by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko and the Ukrainian National Music School. Leontovych specialised in a cappella choral music, ranging from original compositions to church music to elaborate arrangements of folk music.

Dumka is a musical term introduced from the Ukrainian language, with cognates in other Slavic languages. The word dumka literally means "thought". Originally, it was the diminutive form of the Ukrainian term duma, pl. dumy, "a Slavic epic ballad … generally thoughtful or melancholic in character". Classical composers drew on the harmonic patterns in the folk music to inform their more formal classical compositions.

Taras Filenko is an ethnomusicologist, lecturer, and concert pianist most renowned for his research and proliferation of Ukrainian music history of 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Filenko’s findings are presented in his Ph.D. dissertation from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine (1989), his second Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from University of Pittsburgh (1998), and The World of Mykola Lysenko book in English (2000) and Ukrainian (2009). As a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, Dr. Filenko has conducted lectures and developed courses at academic institutions throughout Europe and North America focused on the classical and ethnic musical culture of Eastern Europe.
The International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians is the junior section of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, and it is the largest competition for junior performers up to 17 years of age. The competition was established in 1992 on the initiative of the Association of Tchaikovsky Competition Stars and is held in the sections of piano, violin, and cello.

The university trains about 900 undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates in music and theatre art. It enjoys Level IV accreditation, which is the highest under Ukraine's national standards, and is licensed to train foreign students.
Mykhailo Stepanenko was a Ukrainian composer and musical and public figure, People's Artist of Ukraine, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, professor, chairman of the Union of Composers of Ukraine in 1992–2005.
