NMS Vedenia was a Second World War motor torpedo boat of the Romanian Navy. She was the lead ship of a class of six vessels and saw service during the second half of the war.

Construction and specifications

In 1940, Romania acquired a class of three Vospers type motor torpedo boats, [1] led by NMS Viscolul. During the Second World War, Romania built six Dutch-designed torpedo boats. [2] Numbered 4 to 9, the six boats were launched in 1939 and were fitted out to largely emulate the Vospers boats, having the same length (70 feet/21.33 meters), the same displacement (30 tons), the same top speed (41 knots) and the same torpedo armament (two 21 inch/533 mm torpedo tubes). They differed in terms of artillery, each boat having two 20 mm autocannons as opposed to eight machine guns. [3] The names of the six boats, in order of their numbering, were: Vedenia, Vântul, Vijelia, Viforul, Vârtejul and Vulcanul. Built at the Galați shipyard, Vedenia and her sisters were commissioned in 1943. [4]

Service

Along with one surviving Vospers boat, Vedenia and her five sisters formed the Escadrila de vedete torpiloare (The motor torpedo boat squadron), part of the Grupul submarine și vedete torpiloare (The submarines and motor torpedo boats group). The captain of Vedenia, Ion Zaharia, was also the leader of the entire squadron. [5]

Vedenia was the only boat of her class to be fitted for escort service. On 25–26 May 1944, Vedenia and the surviving Vospers boat, along with two Romanian torpedo boats and two destroyers, escorted the Romanian minelayers Amiral Murgescu and Dacia, as the two laid a barrage of mines off Sulina to reinforce the existing one. [6] The mines laid off Sulina sank the German S-boat S-148 on 22 August 1944. [7]

Vedenia and her sisters were last mentioned in 1949. [8]

NMS <i>Elisabeta</i>

NMS Elisabeta was a small protected cruiser built for the Romanian Navy during the 1880s by Armstrong in Britain as Romania lacked the ability to build the ship itself. Serving mainly as a training ship, she represented Romania at the opening of the Kiel Canal in 1895. She helped protect Romanian interests in Constantinople during the First Balkan War in 1912–1913, but played no significant part in the Second Balkan War and was partially disarmed during World War I. Employed as a barracks ship after the war, the ship was scrapped in 1926.

NMS <i>Amiral Murgescu</i>

NMS Amiral Murgescu was a minelayer and convoy escort of the Romanian Navy, the first sea-going warship built in Romania and the largest Romanian-built warship of World War II. She laid numerous minefields, from the Bulgarian port of Burgas to the Crimean port of Sevastopol, which inflicted significant losses to the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. She also carried out numerous convoy escort missions and took part in the Axis evacuation of the Crimea in May 1944. Due to her success in combat, she was decorated twice by May 1944. She was captured by the Soviet Union in September 1944 and served until 1988, when she was scrapped.

The Romanian Navy during World War II was the main Axis naval force in the Black Sea campaigns and fought against the Soviet Union's Black Sea Fleet from 1941 to 1944. Operations consisted mainly of mine warfare, but there were also escort missions and localized naval engagements. The largest naval action fought by the Romanian Navy was the 26 June 1941 Raid on Constanța, and its most extensive operation was the 1944 evacuation of the Crimea.

NMS <i>Smeul</i> (1888)

NMS Smeul was a torpedo boat of the Romanian Navy. She was part of a class of three, built in France for the Romanian Navy in 1888. She and her two sister ships saw service during World War I.

NMS <i>Trotușul</i>

NMS Trotușul was a small torpedo boat of the Romanian Navy. Along with her three sister ships, she saw service during World War I and World War II, being the most successful vessel in her class.

NMS <i>Mărăști</i> Romanian Navys Vifor-class destroyer

NMS Mărăști was one of four Vifor-class destroyers ordered by Romania shortly before the beginning of the First World War from Italy. All four sister ships were requisitioned when Italy joined the war in 1915. Originally named Vijelie by the Romanians, she was renamed Sparviero in Italian service. Not completed until mid-1917, the ship engaged Austro-Hungarian ships in the Adriatic Sea only twice before the war ended in November 1918. She was given a new name as Mărăști when she was re-purchased by the Romanians in 1920.

Submarine warfare in the Black Sea in World War II during 1944 involved engagements between submarines of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet attacking Axis merchantmen, defended by Romanian and German naval warships, as well as German U-boats and Romanian submarines attacking Soviet merchants on the eastern Black Sea. Before the conclusion of the campaign, Romania joined the Allies after King Michael's Coup. These engagements were a part of the naval Black Sea campaigns.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Naval operations in Romanian-occupied Soviet waters</span>

Between 1941 and 1944, Romania held control over much of the Ukrainian Black Sea coast East of the Crimea. This was acquired during Operation Barbarossa. The Romanian conquest of the Soviet Western Black Sea coast started in July 1941 during Operation München and ended in October that year, after the Siege of Odessa. In the aftermath of these actions, Romania (re)acquired two new sectors of coastline: the Bessarabian coast and the Transnistrian Coast. The latter was lost in April 1944, but the former was successfully defended until August 1944.

<i>Şoimul</i>-class torpedo boat

The Şoimul class was a pair of spar torpedo boats of the Romanian Navy. They were built in 1882 and served until the end of the 1940s.
