Nawab Sirajuddaula Road (previous name: High Street) is the main and busiest road of Kushtia city. The road is known as NS Road. Economic and business activities of Kushtia mainly depend on this road. The road is named after Nawab Sirajuddaula. [1]
On 25 March 1971, Pakistani forces came to Kushtia from the Jessore Cantonment and imposed a continuous 30-hour curfew. On NS Road, several innocent civilians were shot and killed. [2] A bomb was also detonated at the municipal market (Municipality Bazar) located beside the road. In 1972, the Freedom from liberties stage was constructed there. [3]
As an ancient road, many of the city's historic and important establishments and institutions are located alongside it. These are, from east to west:
At one time this road was called High Street. The road was renamed Nawab Shaheed Sirajddaula Road to preserve the memory of the last independent Nawab of Bengal-Bihar-Orissa . Later Nawab Sirajuddaula Road was renamed after removing the word Shaheed . Which is now known to people as NS Road. [1]
