The 1920 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the VII Olympiad and commonly known as Antwerp 1920, were an international multi-sport event held in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Simpson was the first to run 100 yards in 9.4 seconds, but because he used starting blocks, the record was never ratified. He won the 220 yards (200 m) in both NCAA and AAU in 1930. He was also fourth in the 100 meters at the 1932 Olympics. In 1929 he unofficially equaled the 200 meters World Record 20.6 seconds. Simpson attended Ohio State and won a national title in 1929.

George William Lermond was an American long-distance runner. He competed in the men's 5000 metres at the 1924 Summer Olympics. A captain in the United States Army, he died in 1940 attempting to save his son in a house fire. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, after President Franklin Roosevelt gave his permission.
