Syed Naeem Akhtar Andrabi is an Indian politician from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He is a member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council as a candidate of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party. He is also the minister of public works in the Mehbooba Mufti government.

Political career

In 2010, during the 2010 Kashmir unrest, Akhtar, the then spokesman of the party used to criticise the National Conference party and chief minister Omar Abdullah. [2]

Akhtar was elected to the Legislative Council on 7 March 2013 as a Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party candidate. [3] In 2015, Akhtar was made the Education Minister in the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government. [4]

In September 2015, Akhtar installed a helpline number to his personal office to hear complaints from the stakeholders, namely parents, teachers and students concerned. [5] He has also advocated for the separation of politics and education. [6]

In February 2017, in a cabinet reshuffle, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti gave Akhtar the portfolio of "Public Works Department", with Altaf Bukhari getting his portfolio. [7]

Goods and services tax

About the Goods and Services Tax, Akhtar said that the government would introduce a bill in the assembly for its implementation. He has said that goods would be cheaper due to the GST as it would bring an end to the system of double taxation. [8]

Personal life

Akhtar was a critic of the 2016 Kashmir unrest. He was threatened by militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba as he reopened schools which were closed during the unrest. [9]

In August 2016, Akhtar's Srinagar residence was attacked as a petrol bomb was thrown towards it. [10]

Abid Ansari, a legislator from his party, has blamed Akhtar for "spoiling the party" and has accused him of working under external agency. [2]

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was a politician from the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. He served twice as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, from November 2002 to November 2005 and again from March 2015 to January 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet. Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who served as the last Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir as a State, from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020, after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.

The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a state political party in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The PDP was headed and founded by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. His daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, succeeded him as party leader and as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following his death in January 2016.

Rafi Ahmed Mir

Rafi Ahmad Mir is a veteran political leader of Jammu and Kashmir and a founding member of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. He was previously the General Secretary of J&K People's Democratic Party and held administrative position in Mehbooba Mufti's government as the Vice Chairman of J&K Tourism Development Corporation with a ministerial status. He was one of close aides of Mufti with a popular public base in South Kashmir. Now associated with the newly formed J&K Apni Party, Mir has been the key person behind Party's formation along with its founder President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari.

2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, 2014 was held in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in five phases from 25 November – 20 December 2014. Voters elected 87 members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which ends its six-year term on 19 January 2015. The results were declared on 23 December 2014. Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) along with EVMs were used in 3 assembly seats out of 87 in Jammu Kashmir elections.

2016–2017 Kashmir unrest

The 2016–2017 unrest in Kashmir, also known as the Burhan aftermath, refers to a series of violent protests in the Kashmir Valley and subsequently Chenab valley and Poonch district of Jammu division in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It started with the killing of Burhan Wani, a commander of the Kashmir-based Islamic militant organisation Hizbul Mujahideen, by Indian security forces on 8 July 2016. After his killing, anti-Indian protests started in all 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley. Protesters defied curfew with attacks on security forces and public properties.

Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari is a politician from Jammu and Kashmir and the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. He was the MLA in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Amira Kadal constituency for the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party. Bukhari was the elected education minister and later given additional charge of the finance. Almost a year after being expelled from PDP, he formed his own party called Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party on 8 March 2020.

Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali

Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali(Hindi: चौधरी जुल्फकार अली) is an Indian politician and former cabinet minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He is an Advocate by profession and was part of the 11th and 12th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Darhal constituency. He is commonly known as Sher e Pir Pangal in the area. He is a second generation politician whose father Chowdhary Mohmmad Hussain was renowned politician and statesman in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Zulfkar has also served as Cabinet Minister under the Chief Ministership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti 2015 to 2018. He was associated with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and served as district chief of the party for district Rajouri 2003 to 2013, He also served as Member of highest decision making body of the party (PAC). He has left PDP and become the founding member of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Presently Vice President of the party. Ali has been Honoured with Best Legislature 2012. He is one of the most educated politician in Jammu and Kashmir state. As a Cabinet Minister, Ali headed various portfolios. He is pioneer minister of Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Zulfkar also implemented national food security act (NFSA) in the state and launched food for poor scheme (MMSFES).

Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration

The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is a political alliance between the several regional political parties in Jammu and Kashmir reportedly aimed at restoring special status along with Article 35A of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah is the president of the alliance.

Syed Farooq Ahmad Andrabi is an Indian politician and the former member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He represented Dooru assembly constituency of Anantnag district in 2014. He was appointed to the state ministry in 2016 and subsequently served minister for Hajj and Auqaf until he resigned from the ministry in December 2017 in an attempt to appointed his nephew Tassaduq Hussain Mufti to the post.
